Scroll through Menu, Shooting Menu, Picture Control, Manage Picture Control, to :Multiple Exposures"
once selected, choose the number if frames to combine (between 2 and 10), hit OK, and DONE, and look for little rectangles mating in the LCD viewfinder.
Shoot Away until you have shot the number you selected, A "Write" light will tell you it is combining and writing to the CF card.
Rinse and Repeat!

"Don't turn off the automatic exposure compensation, called Auto Gain. If you do you'll get at least a stop of overexposure."

How can I get the Multiple Exposure option my D700 to be selectable? Currently it is grayed out.
Only multiple exposure and interval time shooting are greyed out in the shooting menu. I have reset the shooting menu however they are still greyed out.

If you are grayed out, either you are in an IDIOT mode (on Canon this is the GREEN setting.) Or you may not be set for JPEG or NEF.
