How can I get a tan (or at least a glow) on the beach without getting sunburned? I want to do the least damage to my skin as possible.

I'm going on vacation in 10 days, and I am concerned about my skin. I used a product last year that caused me to burn very badly, and now I am paranoid about getting burned again.

That being said, I love having a tan, or a beachy glow. How can I accomplish this without burning? I don't want a spray tan or anything of that nature. I want to tan at the beach without getting sunburned.

Wear sunscreen and fake tan when you get home, or put some tanning cream on. It's better that you protect your skin from the sun than get burned. I have been in a lot of pain in my life from getting burned and I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone else.

This is pretty well what I was going to say too.

Well, short of the getting burned a lot - I don't burn very easily.

But the tan just isn't worth it. Lube up with SPF 60 (or other very high number) and head to the mall either for a fake-and-bake or a spray-and-shine when you get home.

Skin cancer is more serious than most folks want to believe.

I'd go with this advice - and I agree with the comment that skin cancer's more serious than most folks want to believe. My mom was recently treated for melanoma - good news being that the doctor caught it in the very-early stages. It wasn't serious, and was removed in the doctor's office in 20-30 minutes, but it still involves sutures and a recovery period. And the nutty thing is that the spot was TINY - not even as big around as a toddler's pinky finger. TINY, but cancerous. You have to be careful.

You are much better off using a high SPF sunscreen and using a tanner. You skin will thank you.

The UV that you get from the tanning machine is much worse. Use a SPF 50+ sunscreen. Definitely use the fake tan stuff because your skin will deteriorate and you will be at more risk for skin cancer.

Tanning is also an indication that you are damaging your skin--the increased pigment is a defense mechanism against UV rays. Wear a good quality sunscreen, minimize exposure during the middle of the day, and apply a bronzer to simulate a tan.

You can buy tanning lotion with sunscreen in it. Go check out your local store and see what they stock.

Rather than applying tan lotions and other stuff of that sort, it would be best to head to the beach, and stay there for a limited period of time. The longer period of time you stay, the more tanned you get. There are many harmful side effects of tanning lotions etc. It would be best to consult a dermatologist(skin specialist). The second best thing would be to take the all-natural tan approach.

Step 1
SUN BLOCK

Spray sun lotions are very effective in reaching areas you can't get to by hand. Many cost between $6 and $12. I used my friend's bottle and after spraying every inch of me and spending hours in the sun, I didn't burn. Stranger than that, I didn't tan! So if you are looking to avoid a tan all together try a spray on sun screen with SPF 15 or 30 in a liberal amount.

Step 2
TANNING OIL

This is fine to use if you aren't fair skinned. If you are, be careful not to stay in the sun too long. No more than a half hour total. Fifteen minutes on your back and fifteen minutes on your stomach is best.

Step 3
SPRAY ON TAN

Don't get a $6.99 bottle of tanner. I did this once and I looked jaundice for a week. Tanning salons have a service where they literally spray your tan on and you don't have to worry about the possible skin damage from sun bathing.

Step 4
TANNING SALON

Especially if you are fair skinned, it might not be a bad idea to go to a tanning salon before you hit the beach. Going a few times for as little as 5 minutes can give you some protection for when you are on the beach running around in the real thing.

Step 5
USE SHADE

If there is a tree, sit under it. If not, it would be a good idea to use a beach umbrella. If you are prone to burn, wear a t-shirt when you will spend a lot of time in the sun. Put one on when you get out of the pool, especially if your sun block isn't water proof.
