Is there any doubt that Mr. charles beleives what he is singing? Nobody does it better. Here's hoping our country can come all the back to what it once was, a place we can all be proud of our whole lives, and never have to apologise for being the greatest and the best. But it takes sacrifice, people willing to love our country more than self, and mercy more than life (or strife).
"Oh beautiful, for heroes proved,
In liberating strife,
Who more than self, our country loved,
And mercy more than life,"

Quote---
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America
Low techs at the wheel
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Nobody needs anyone
They don't even just pretend
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America
CHORUS (x2)
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans
Johnny's in America
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny wants a brain
Johnny wants to suck on a Coke
Johnny wants a woman
Johnny wants to think of a joke
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
CHORUS (x2)
I'm afraid of Americans
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America
Johnny looks up at the stars
Johnny combs his hair
And Johnny wants p***y in cars
Johnny's in America, uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America, uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
CHORUS (x2)
I'm afraid of Americans
God is an American
God is an American
CHORUS (x2)
Yeah, I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the words
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans
Johnny's an American
Johnny's an American
Johnny's an American, uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh (repeat)

Of course you have to know that California girls come from everywhere in the world it’s just that, well California Girls are a little loose. So for all of you lady’s who do not like to take your clothes off at the beach, or go to the supermarket in shorts.

M$I didn't intend it to mean "unhelpful", and i didn't intend it to insult you. I just figured that the contest was decided by votes. If its ok to vote someone up if you agree with them, whats wrong with voting someone down if you disagree?
Great answer! Thanks! :)
Rather childesh of you to vote my answer down simple because you disagree with it's intrepretation of what currently defines the USA.
And you have the adacity to use the word "solidarity" to justify your unhelpful vote?
Your unhelpful vote simply reinforces the validity of my choice.
Combine my New York Jewish roots (in the form of the singer)-and add an American theme.

M$I love this song and the lyrics were written well. The singer is Freddie Aguilar a famous singer in our country and abroad.
Our country were colonized by Spain for hundreds of years, was colonized by U.S., and was under Japanese gov't for 3 years.
This song tells about the our long for freedom of our nation, freedom from foreign bondage. Because even today as we have our own government, it is sad to know that our nation is still struggling. For we developed colonial mentality which is still considered a form of bondage.
This is in Filipino and here is the translation of it:
----quote-----
My beloved country
Filipinas is your name
Pearl of the Orient
Blest with unblemished beauty
But alas! robbed of your longed-for freedom
Always weeping in poverty and pain.
My country, Filipinas
Land of gold and flowers
Love has given her grace and tranquility
And her radiance and loveliness
drew rapacious foreigners
My country, they have imprisoned you
Thrown you into sorrow and despair.
Even birds who freely fly
When caged will struggle to escape
What more of a country endowed with
nobility
Would she not strive to break free?
Filipinas, my cherished land
My home of sorrow and tears
Always I dream to see you truly free.
How lovely it is to live in one's native land
If there is no slavery and freedom
reigns supreme
A people who are now oppressed
In the morrow shall stand up
The east will turn a fiery crimson
And mark the dawn of freedom.

M$This video shows all values and tributes of the Dutch.
No nonsense (except when we win the European Soccer championship), respect for each other, (but not for the police, nor your parents).
This song was created mid-1990s, and featured a Dutch Bank commercial. If became so popular, the song was commercially released, and became a solid number one hit in the musical charts.
In the last 15 years, a lot has changed in The Netherlands. Our numbers have grown from 15 million to nearly 17 million, and our (political) climate has lost much of its tolerance towards 'others', and we've endured two political murders (Pim Fortuijn and Theo van Gogh).
It's good to view this video every now and then, to remind us of who we really are.

refrein:
15 Miljoen mensen
Op dat hele kleine stukje aarde
Die schrijf je niet de wetten voor
Die laat je in hun waarde
15 Miljoen mensen
Op dat hele kleine stukje aarde
Die moeten niet `t keurslijf in
Die laat je in hun waarde
Het land vol groepen van protest
Geen chef die echt de baas is
Gordijnen altijd open zijn
Lunch een broodje kaas is
Het land vol van verdraagzaamheid
Alleen niet voor de buurman
De grote vraag die blijft altijd
Waar betaalt `ie nou z`n huur van
`t Land dat zorgt voor iedereen
Geen hond die van een goot weet
Met nassiballen in de muur
En niemand die droog brood eet

M$I name this song as my view of what defines my country from my point of view. You see, I'm an atheist. From my point of view, not holding this as Johnny Cash trying to convey a point in his words, this song in the hands of general America does not hold such a great tenor.
Without the foresight of Johnny's true meaning, this song comes off as zealotry, suggesting the singer of this song indeed knows God's will. Also, given the choirs line, it seems not only villains of the singer are to blame, but also those associated with the villains by proxy.
And it isn't a limitation of to be questioned or spoke to. No, it is to simply be cut down as it were, in the name of God.
All of this coupled with the fact we are suppose to be a free country... kinda sets the right parlor of America these days in my opinion...

M$I explained that! haaha... without the foresight of Johnny Cash singing his own brand of 'sinner turned saint' it begins to sound more like the blind zealous rhetoric that plagues America today: Glen Beck, Quran burnings, the condemning of the mosque in New York, the persecution of Islamic follower... what ever happened to:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Good song, but how does it define your country?

M$"If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I'd worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.
I'd thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can't take that away.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.
That I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

M$All the BS patriotic songs that gloss over these facts and paint a rosey picture of what a great country the USA is, do not in my opinion give a true definition of what the USA is at the moment.
Although it was written almost 40 years ago I believe the song that best defines the USA as it exsist today would be, "Golden Country".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjqjZsw66DE&feature=related
It would behove us as citizens of the USA to heed these words and stop patting ourselves on the back about how great we are, roll up our sleeves, pitch in to actually impliment positive change that might just get this nation back to the greatness it once had.

M$What is it you love about your country, cause I didn't see a single good point in that video, honestly. I believe you when you say you love America, so what is it you love? Obviously it's not all the negative things. One thing I love is the kind and generous spirit I find everywhere I go, the willingness to help others. .
Can't lie...i took a little offense. Our country might be in trouble, but cushy songs like this aren't "BS". Despite the problems we face, Americans still believe in solidarity. It's disappointing that it takes events such as 9/11 for us to realize this.
Indeed ...This song and the video describes US as we see it from Europe right now. No offense! :)
@thekidrice....solidarity? I've never in my 59 years seen this nation so divided..where is this solidarity you speak of?
@vladis...no offense taken, how can the rest of the world see the USA as anything else right now?
Its very unsettling when the country which the world looks towards to lead shows confusion and lack of solidarity.
@keepontryin
For the same reasons the Duke loved her.
I used the video in my answer because imo it best defines where this country is now, not what it was or hopefully can be again.
However....This not explains a down-vote...This is a personal opinion contest. :) But thanks for taking time to explain your action! ;)
Best regards,
Vlad

Without the subjectivity attached to displaying my opinion of the thoughts, ideas, and actions depicted within this video.. I feel this is a great choice from @shadowbear
Well, I won't vote it down--yet, but I will go as far as to say that the video was jarring, to say the least. I couldn't watch it. My entire family is originally from New York, myself included. I had been only on the sidewalk in front of The WTC, but in all the times I've been to Manhattan, I never went up into the Towers.
I will agree with thekidrice--the video had nothing to do with a song that defines a nation.
On September 11, 2001, at about 3:30 PM local time, I was enjoying some ice cream with a bunch of friends next to a pool on a cruise in Europe. Someone came up to our table and said, "Hey, did you guys see, something happened at The World Trade Center--it's on all the TVs inside." I walked into the bar and there was complete silence except for the huge TV. I sat glued to the TV all day. That night, I tried frantically to reach family in New York City, only being able to at 2:00 a.m. local, I think 7 PM in New York. A portion of the cruise was canceled due to security concerns. People in Gibraltar were expressing their sympathy--simply because we were American.
While we had no problem flying from Spain to France, because of the ground-stop that was ordered on all US air traffic, we couldn't get home from Paris for about 2-3 weeks. I hope it's the last time I see military personnel armed with machine guns on duty in an airport.
I have friends and family in Europe so I have a more realistic view of things there than might someone who doesn't.. But the general feelings towards Europe ain't too hot over here. And that was well before the British...Petroleum thing.
Have you heard of "Freedom Fries?" Ask the US House & Senate, who sparked a pop-culture phenomenon in 2003. Click here for CNN article
And that's the last time I'll update this entry--a lot of others have managed to sneak in every time I update it.
Ok…Please let’s keep this question On-Topic. :)))
There is no reason to transform this question in a political one. And if we do…let’s do it in another thread. ;)
Let’s keep this question related to …SONGS!
Waiting for a song from Philippine! :D
Or India!
:D
Political Solidarity, No. But I am a firm believer in social solidarity--our solidarity as a nation: how do we, citizens of the US, define ourselves? I've come to understand that my opinion is probably a product of my geographic location and upbringing.
I'm not trying to incite a debate. I just feel that your "music video" was purely political and has nothing to do with the definition of US as a country.
When you spend time in other nations, you realize that despite all the BS that is going on around us, there are freedoms and aspects of our country that are unattainable anywhere else in the world. It makes you feel proud to be an American.
And trust me, I'm all for positive change, and i have no problem admitting there is a lot we have done wrong. Being a proud American is about being conscious of these problems and truly working to solve them or have a desire to change them.

M$Ah ; ) You librarians, always worrying about technicalities.... oh wait, I am a librarian too. Hmmm, well then, my only excuse is that I never was very good at following rules. Actually, though, in this case it was a statement of my feelings, I don't feel like America is my country any more. Texas is the only "country" I will claim at this point and I do actually have a copy of my great, great, great, great grandfather's passport when he came into Texas when it was a separate country. Guess I am just romanticizing the past. : )
Unless it secedes, Texas is not a country. I have no problem with you being proud of your state, but down vote for not following the instructions.
