Shouldn't at least partial credit be given for best answer if you thoroughly investigated and cited but the questioner never comes back?
I spent time finding the answer and the user asking the question did not use Mahalo for anything else.
I could tell this was a fan, but I answered the main issue question and it is usable for future research..
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$My question is that if there is only one answer, why wouldn't that become the best answer by default? This could be that partial credit suggestion you had. Unless, of course, the questioner rates it as a non-helpful question.

That's correct demanda: most questions get a best answer selected. I think you have to look at the overall experience of providing help to not only the person who asked for it, but the dozens to thousands who will visit that question in the future when they search for the keywords in the question.
Also, the person was probably (95% chance) emailed the answer to the question. They probably got enough value reading it in their inbox or blackberry and didn't bother to come thank you.... that's our lot in life: helping folks but not always getting a big thank you. :-)
You guys all gave me answers I wanted to vote as best for different reasons......thanks all!
