Should you use a meat thermometer every time you cook meat?

What should the internal temperature be when cooking meat? Can you guess when the food is done or do you have to use a meat thermometer?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi, @mmng23!

If you just started out cooking and you are cooking whole chickens or big meat joints, then it is easiest and safest to use a meat thermometer every time. After a while you will get more experience and learn other ways of determining whether the meat is done or not. You can use a metal skewer, for example, and stick it into the meat and then you can feel whether it is done or not. But that takes practice.

The internal temperature must always be according to the recipe if it specifies that. Especially with chicken you must make sure that it is cooked through as there may be a chance of salmonella otherwise. Raw chicken or raw chicken bones must be avoided.

The same really also goes for pork meat. It should be properly done. The only exception here would be beef and it's largely a matter of taste whether you want it done, medium or rare.

Having a food thermometer for cooking meat such as a wireless BBQ thermometer for cooking BBQ can be very helpful in cooking. It is not enough that you guess if the food is already done or cooked just by looking at the color of the meat or something. Using a food thermometer is really helpful to accurately tell if your meat is cooked or not. This is very helpful for people who want their meat to be cooked well.
