Should you make your child wear a helmet?

Should a child always be made to wear a helmet when riding bike, rollerskating, skateboarding...etc.?

For me, it is always important to let your child wear a helmet especially if you are after your child's safety. There are even mandatory laws that require children below 18 years old to wear protective gears such as bike helmets and skateboard helmets. These laws are applicable in most states in the US and other countries as well.

When you consider just how fast children go on skateboards, bicycles and roller skates, the thought and sound of their skull hitting the pavement when they wipe out, seems to be a cut and clear answer. The answer being “Yes”, wear a helmet or don’t ride!! Head injuries resulting from hitting your head on a hard surface can cause brain damage, injury and even death. Get your child a cool helmet and tell them either wear it or don’t ride!

I used to live right next to a ski slope. My then six year old always wore a helmet or he stayed home. My sixteen year old was a bit “too cool” and snuck his helmet into a locker at the slopes so that I wouldn’t know that he wasn’t wearing it. That is until one day when he went down hard and rang his own bell. He told me what happened and also told me that he would never ride without a helmet again. He became a real advocate and wouldn’t ride with anyone unless they were wearing a helmet.

Each year in the United States, skateboarding injuries cause about 50,000 visits to emergency departments and 1500 children and adolescents to be hospitalized. (Source: AAP, March 2002. )
Most hospitalizations involve head injury. Even injuries that heal quickly can cause pain and anxiety, cost time, and money and may lead to disabilities. This can include loss of vision, hearing and speech; inability to walk, bathe, toilet, dress or feed yourself; and changes in thinking and behavior.
