Well, this is certainly a good question. I know how important my animals are to me. And while I would be devastated should something happen to them, I wouldn't expect my employer to pay me to take a day off to mourn them. I also wouldn't expect them to forgive time off, as it is not the same as losing a parent or sibling. There is alot of emotion that we can devote to our pets, but it can not be compared to the relationship we have with our family. There are also alot of other factors to consider when a loved human dies. There is a funeral, possible legal issues and other things that need to be tended to. When my mother passed away, I had to travel to my home town, 10 hours away. There was 5 young children that needed to be legally placed with family, my brother came to live with me, and that required court proceedings and more. I was there for two weeks. This wouldn't happen with my pets. So no, I don't think that this type of benefit should be offered.

I realize that for many people their pet is like family to them, but employers are having a tough time staying afloat as it is.
Making another demand of employers is unfair, perhaps for a spouse or parent but not for a pet.

My company offers up to three paid bereavement days for immediate family members. Other companies will be different but they will more or less offer days off only for immediate family members. This excludes even cousins. As for a pet, I know a lot of people grow close and attached to their pets, even to the point that the pet is more important than family members.

But I don't believe pets can qualify as an immediate family member. They are not humans, even if pet owners may disagree. At my work, we may grant a family day (unpaid) for someone who loses a pet, but unfortunately that is all. I hope pet owners don't find my answer offensive, but I really don't think they qualify as a family member.

No it starts to be ridiculous what people want to take a day off for. If it means that mush to you take a vacation day. Oh my pet fish died I need the day off, no you don't understand he was big and I need to wait for the plumber. lol
