Should women be "allowed" to breastfeed in public?

Yes, women should be allowed to breastfeed in public. Breastfeeding is simply the act of feeding an infant child.* If women were not allowed to breastfeed in public then it would be like not allowing you to give a 6 year old her lunch in front of other people. The only reason why this is even a question that we ask and I'm talking about is because it is us adults that have made breastfeeding something uncomfortable. I suppose it is because we live in a fairly conservative society compared to other countries in the world. Just think how hyper-sexualized we must be as a society if we are uncomfortable with a woman showing her breast uncovered to feed her child, or anything to do with female nudity, like topless beaches. I admit I am more comfortable when breastfeeding in public is done discreetly, but that is totally up to the mother whether she wants to cover up or not!

*I was in the Peruvian countryside 2 months ago and breastfeeding actually was not just the act of feeding infant children but also walking, talking, fully-toothed (ouch!) children as well. Admittedly this was a big awkward, as women would just be sitting there and then their 3 year old child would come up and search for the mothers breast, and actually sit and feed. Nobody flinched.

Personally, I scale this on the same level as nose-picking. It's natural to do it, and sometimes necessary, but You shouldn't confront others with it too bluntly.
So, as long as women don't pop out a teet in the middle of a conversation, I'm very fine with it.

What I'm not fine with are women who just start breastfeeding at any given moment, and expect me to pretend nothing happens. Yes, I'll try to ignore it, and not to stare, but these things do attract the eye (in a non-sexual way, I have to add).

Now please don't take this personally, but wow I find it offensive that someone equates picking their nose with breastfeeding a human child :(

Being an Australian, where breastfeeding in public happens, and pretty much anywhere you 'might' see someone breastfeeding, its really not a big deal. Most women don't just flop it out willy nilly. You think that's comfortable for them too?

We do this because its like anyone else eating ( not nose picking ) - its eating - and I think its OK to eat in public :)

I'm all for breast feeding and I think it's a beautiful, natural thing, but I also believe in discretion. I think that a blanket or cloth can be strategically placed when in public. I believe that would be the polite thing to do. When in public, one must consider those around them.

I think it is perfectly normal and natural, and it is wrong to ask that it is not done...it has been done since the begenning of time, way before formula was invented.

Yes, but with some discretion. Pardon the pun but just arbitrarily 'whipping it out' for the world to see is inappropriate. Breastfeeding is a perfectly natural function and creates a bond between mother and child but may be awkward for those nearby.

Of corse thy should be allowed- Is there a country or situation when it si not allowed?
It is a absolut natural act - and if a baby has hunger the only way to stop crying is to feed it!
