Should we boycott BP?

Boycotting BP seems to be a popular response among many in the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill from Deepwater Horizon. BP has several gas stations across the country and is best known for Castrol brand motor oil. There appears to be a division of many people on the web about boycotting BP. Many say that it is not worth the effort. Others point out that this could have a more detrimental effect on the economy, and still others insist that we should take a stand, band together, and try to stop the sale of BP products in North America. Would boycotting these products really have an impact on BP? How would this affect cleanup in the Gulf? And is this the most appropriate way to deal with the situation?

The question here should not be whether we should boycott BP or not. Instead the question should be who failed to act? The government who failed to implement a system of effective controls and measures to ensure that deep water oil rigs were equipped with the proper safety measures to prevent such a disaster or the oil company who failed to ensure their rig was safe not only to the people working on it but the ecosystem as well. I think we as a society are quick to point the finger and overlook the fact that BP is not the only suspect in this matter. The Obama Administration is simply trying to save face by finally coming down on off shore drilling after a devastating disaster has already occured. I believe that if we must boycott BP then we are morally obligated to also boycott our own government who is just as much at fault as anybody else.

I believe the most responsible thing to do here is focus on getting the oil cleaned up, develop strict standards to regulate off shore drilling, and stop wasting time trying to decide what BP's punishment should be. BP's punishment will be the billions of dollars in money lost that they must pay in claims and clean up fees. We all use gasoline in some aspect or another, and this disaster could have struck any of the major oil companies. If it wasn't for our greedy need for crude, about 17 million barrels a day, those deep oil rigs wouldn't even be there in the first place. We as a nation devour crude in immense quantities. Our hunger fueled this disaster. Let's all accept blame and move on (http://www.offshore-environment.com/facts.html).

No we should not boycott BP. First you are only hurting the small businessman when you boycott them. BP if it does not sell it's oil and gas through local stations will only sell it to other stations. They will sell their gas no matter what and you are only putting the gas station owner out of business and on the unemployment and welfare rolls. You will be buying their gas from Shell or Gulf or whoever they sell to. You will also not be able to boycott them Worldwide as they sell in many markets. You will never put a dent into BP and you will give them a good excuse not to continue with the cleanup. This is another acton put together by people who don't think things through.
