Toys in Happy Meals should absolutely not be banned. What's next? Banning sex in advertising? What about poor, impressionable children *over* 18? Perhaps they'd do anything a model in sexy lingerie told them to. Should we regulate against this as well?

People keep coming back to buy Happy Meals with toys over and over again because they think it's worth it. If they had a bad experience, they wouldn't be back. It's funny that people are worried about a corporation influencing the consumption habits of kids who don't have money and credit cards. I wonder what the fines are like for something like this. I sincerely hope there are restaurants that refuse to comply. If a law like this ever had an effect on my business, I would launch personal attacks in the media against the people responsible for it. This is insane.

Sorry, I was still waiting for the end of the video to load as I finished my reply. For the $1000 fine (I didn't know how much the fine was going to cost when I typed out my answer), I hope every single restaurant continues to sell these toys. Nothing makes me want to side with large corporations more than misguided legislation like this.

No way! If parents want to purchase Happy Meals for their kids, let them and let the kids get the toys. This is just another way that people try to tell us how to live our lives. Just cause a kid eats one Happy Meal a week and gets a free toy and they are happy, it doesn't mean the kid is going to become a fat adult. Let parents be parents. If they screw up, then it's their fault, not the toy giving restaurants. :-)

Absolutely not. I think for many children (mine included) the main objective of having their parents order a Happy Meal for them is to obtain one of the current trendy toys included in these meals. The toy inside the meal bag presents not only a surprise but and inspiration for children to eat up in order to receive the treat accompanying the meal. In Germany, I have a similar toy-in-bag type of surprise that includes a chocolate egg that contains a yellow bubble with a plastic toy inside. The chocolate is delicious and the knowledge of some type of toy awaiting its discovery inside the egg is entirely suspenseful and exciting for most children. The egg is not sold here in the states, however, and I have been told that one of the reasons why is not just because the food item is an international creation, but because the US does not approve of selling food with plastic toys hidden inside. I am not completely sure on the validity of this argument, but I guess if the statement is true, then a similar argument could be made for the toys sold inside the kids meal bags. Of course, these toys do not always present an immediate harm to the consumer and under proper parental guidance no accidents should be able to occur.

No, they shouldn't. That's hurting a business, which the government shouldn't be allowed to do. Instead, they should put toys with healthy meals, so kids associate fun with proper nutrition and portion sizes. The government shouldn't try to sabotage and regulate a business that much. People are going to buy their children whatever they want, so if their child wants that toy, they will do whatever it takes to get it--even if they have to buy a fattening meal for them. If they're banning the toys, then they will consider banning the playgrounds. These things make childhood memories. We shouldn't take these things away from children.

Honestly, what would a happy meal be without the toy surprise? It would be a meal...they would have to rename it to the "Lame Kids Meal". People have been enjoying the Happy Meal, and even adults buy them just to get the prize. THis would certainly put a kink in the McDonald's menu.....

This a scary step in the wrong direction. I am all for making America healthier, but this.....is digging into the simple things that are enjoyed by millions. And my question is....does taking the toy out really make that big of a difference.....people are still going to buy fast food....it's as simple as that.

I understand their point: kids are susceptible to marketing in a much more extreme way than adults are, and marketing unhealthy food at kids is irresponsible. We wouldn't let companies put toys into packs of cigarettes, so why put them into obesity-causing crap food?

On the other hand, it really is on parents to feed their kids properly. The toys are also so cheap and crappy that the kids can be easily distracted by other things. They are just as lulled in by the play structures and salty, sugary food as they are by the toys. Parents need to put their foot down and indulge their kids in careful moderation, or not at all.

If parents have a problem with tantrum-throwing brats who demand to go to McDonalds because they want the toy, then the parents did a half-assed job raising their kids. They can seek out parenting resources, and/or boycott McDonalds until the toys go away. The state trying to nanny kids is just a bad idea.

Most of the time, the kids aren't the ones who want the toys. The parents want them to sell on eBay. I used to collect Happy Meal toys back when they would let you buy the toys without the Happy Meals. I have tons of them sitting in my attic, waiting to be worth something.
