Should the parents of the 3-year-old boy who was attacked by a python be held responsible for the attack?

Jayden Melendrez, a 3-year-old boy, was attacked by a python snake earlier this year in his home. The 18-foot python snake was reportedly kept in a cage that was sealed with duct tape and did not have locks. It escaped and attacked Jayden. Although his mother saved him from the attack by stabbing the snake, his parents have been arrested for child abuse and neglect due to the incident. The boy's grandmother say the parents were watching the snake for a friend. Do you think the parents should be found guilty of child abuse and neglect because of the snake attack? Is it ever acceptable to keep a python in your house when you have two small children?

As a mandated reported, I would certainly have to report this incident if I had heard it. If the parents involved the police, paramedics or a hospital, they are mandated reporters as well (at least, in California, but I'm sure in other states as well).

I wouldn't think there would be criminal charges for this and I doubt that the child would be removed from the home... unless there were previous incidents.

I think it's acceptable to keep all sorts of pets with kids. You have to take certain precautions with some pets. A pet such as a dog could attack (and kill) a child and THAT would be child abuse (and there have been plenty of cases to that effect). So, it's not the pet that is at fault, it's the parents.
