Should Tax-payers bailout BP and pay for the Gulf Cleanup?

Democrats are trying to push a bill that would ensure tax-payers won't have to bailout BP. But Republicans are trying to stop it.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No. I'm not paying a dime. I may help organize an effort to raise money to go to aid organizations--that's already in the works--but no way, no how should BP get a dime of anyone's money except for the money of whoever invested in them before the thing blew 42 or so days ago, in April. Last I heard that stock slipped 30%. I can't imagine they won't go broke paying for the cleanup, for which President Obama has said he will hold them accountable.

BP Should be held accountable. I saw something on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart--BP had hundreds of knowing, willful safety violation complaints against them in the last 4 years, or something like that--and in the same period of time Exxon had only one. It's not like their collapse would hurt economy--there are plenty of oil companies to pick up the slack and maybe do things smarter.

They're already paying out millions to residents of Louisiana and it's quite possible the Deepwater Horizon debacle will have destroyed the seafood industry not only in The Gulf, but up The East Coast, too. It's certainly taking many family businesses down, some generations old.

Someone on TV tonight said that instead of trying to figure out how to get the oil out of the water, they're going tobe figuring out how to get dead sea-life and water out of the oil.

I'd like to meet the person who came up with the brilliant idea to use a dispersant--now instead of one big blob you've got billions of tiny blobs. The effect to tourism & travel will be devastating. (I was in hospitality for a dozen years and I really feel sorry for the people down there). That oil can never be completely removed in our lifetimes--no matter how old you are.

Ok, so what would be the logic in that? BP makes billions of dollars from extracting oil that does not belong to it - but that's just how the industry works, fine. BP does an extremely poor job of operating safely, with multitudes of safety violations, some causing people's deaths (e.g. in the explosion in Texas) - not so fine. BP makes more money by cutting corners - even less fine. Now as a result of their poor management (and if they chose a bad driller or a bad operator and did not manage them properly to ensure they did things right, that's still BP's responsibility) there is what will arguably turn out to be the worst man-made disaster in all of history - and we should all bail them out? Why? Let them pay for making right the damage they caused, or at least as much of it as is humanly possible. If it takes every last penny the company has, so be it. If BP survives the process, they will probably start their recovery by firing every one of the managers who did not do their job properly. If they don't survive, the people who did a good job there can find jobs with the competition, of which there are many of, with better safety records.

Thank you very much. I sure hope bp doesn't go into the condom industry any time soon--the cover they put on their spewing geyser has obviously burst like crazy.

I'll assume you meant to submit that as an actual answer, not a comment to my post, which clearly, in no uncertain terms says tough-o to bp.

Thanks for the votes, guys. Let me pass this along:

No. BP should be compensating America for their lacking safety protocols and neglected equipment which led to the Gulf Oil Spill. The spill has cost some Americans their livelihoods. The republicans are feeling the heat from the BP lobbiers to help their investors.

Hell no - they're an *oil company* (and one of the biggest in the world) and have billions in profits I'm sure.

While I'm deeply disturbed about this, I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake. They have the funds to fix this on their own and finance the entire thing. Personally, I think they should spend every single last dime they have cleaning this up since they single handedly destroyed every kind of fishing venture in the Gulf of Mexico, put thousands out of a job and basically destroyed an entire eco-system.

And now *I* have to pay for that? HELL NO. Put those guys straight out of business by paying for their mistake. Frankly, I'm offended that we should even THINK about paying for this. That's like goign to a restraunt, having the wait staff spill hot soup all over you and then having them demand payment for it. Wow... I'm getting pretty upset.
Next question...

Taxpayers should NOT have to pay for the mistakes and corruption of BP and Deepwater Horizon. I'll donate money to the relief efforts to help clean up and get the people down there back on their feet, but I do not want my money helping either of these companies.
