Should Rhode Island change its name?

The state known as Rhode Island is actually named Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. There is a ballot initiative to change the name to simply Rhode Island because "State Rep. Joseph Almeida, the measure's sponsor, argues that the moniker gives too "proud" a place to slavery". While appearing to appeal to political correctness, this initiative is completely misleading historically. Providence Plantation was founded and named when the word Plantation had nothing to do with slavery, it meant a colony or settlement in a new land. When the meaning of a large farm for tobacco or cotton came into use a hundred years later, slavery was long banned in Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The plantations in question simply had nothing to do with slavery and changing the name appears to be simply encouraging ignorance. What is your opinion and why (cite references)?

When you said they wanted to change it I thought you wanted top get rid of the island part. I guess the place was a penal colony. The big shots thought it was an island until the criminals just walked off. It has been connected to Connecticut and Massachusetts, ever since.

It was not a penal colony. You are right that the island is a small part of the small state. Woonsocket would be a good name for the state, it would stand out and not conflict with anything.

As an African American and a Resident of Rhode Island, the name of the place is fine. Here is my reasons: One reason is that many people have no idea what so ever what Providence Plantations is, nor did they ever care. Two, plantation is the name of the place that planted some crop so it doesn't really have anything to do with slavery. Three, Rhode Island was at one time a leader in the slave trade, but no one would care or know that if people would stop hearing about how the name means that. The thing about prejudice, is that people keep using seemingly good intentions to keep it going. By continuously making people think about prejudice in situations like this, you keep it in the mind of us African Americans that we were slaves and in the mind of whites that they have some reason not to trust or like us. I would just rather these people not use my race because they want to change the name of the state, instead just do it because it takes a long time to put it on documents.

Black slavery was outlawed in Rhode Island very early in the 17th century, so there were few if any black slaves ever in the state. They did have some Indian slaves from captives in the wars with the local Indians early on. The African American experience just isn't part of the early history of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Everyone needs to have a better understanding of history, and changing a name only discourages people from learning it. I agree with you that bringing slavery up so often is not a positive thing for either whites or blacks.

Mr. Almeida is misguided, does he not know the history of his own state. The name should stand.

I have to admit that my facetious nature would like me to suggest that they change the name to Flu Continental, but I will refrain. I don't think that it would hurt to change the name of any state for any reason, except that businesses would incur enormous expenses, in stationary, address contacts, etc.
What does surprise me is how many people know so little about the institution of slavery. I don't mean slavery in the US or even in the Americas, I mean slavery throughout history.

I think businesses etc have been using the short name.
Maybe they should sell the naming rights?

Your answers are generally too shot. I think you should take a little more time to write something more insightful and interesting. Instead of three fragments of sentences on three answers, considers putting together three insightful sentences on one answer!

@wingspress, to elaborate a bit; this is a discussion question not a poll. That's why I asked "What is your opinion and why (cite references)? "
So you should contribute a new idea, or a fact to support someone else's idea, etc.
