Should President Obama fire General McChrystal over the remarks reported in the Rolling Stone?

The June 22, 2010 article by Michael Hastings in the Rolling Stone portrays a commander who expresses disrespect for the Vice President and key administration personnel in Afghanistan. Quotes by aides indicate there the remarks reflect McChrystal's long-term perspective and are not one-off misquotes by Hastings. McChrystal has been disciplined by the President before. Should the General be fired?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

What would the General do if someone under his command made public remarks like that about their superior officers and their colleagues?

I'm guessing that person would be in deep trouble.

I think it may work out that the General will do some very public apologizing and groveling and keep his job. That might be the best option as he is the person that devised the current Afghan strategy and I guess might be the best person to oversee it.

However I'm sure the US has more than one capable General, and if can't make things right with apologies and explanations then he should go.

Generals, as the people under their command, need to show a higher level of discipline and honor than the average Rolling Stone interviewee.

Of course he should (and did).

Kind of a moot point since it already is resolved, but there was no other resolution. Putting aside how unprofessional it is to publicly degrade your boss in a public forum, the complete disregard for the chain of command could not be allowed to stand.

Even McChrystal's supporters refused to argue that this complete lapse of judgement was not a fireable offense (they argued that he should be spared and allowed to remain b/c we are so close to the upcoming surge)

Yes, McChrystal should be fired. He obviously is not a professional. A professional would, at least publicly, be respectful to and about all those they work with and for. In all the interviews that McChrystal has done that has resulted in glaring faux pas, his answers and quips were all childish, unprofessional, and damaging in various degrees. He obviously has no business being a General and being in the public spotlight as an authority figure.
