Should PETA have photoshopped the First Lady nude? Would that have gotten more publicity for their anti-fur campaign?

I think she would have been a hit in their "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign but she probably would never pose for one of those posters. Still, she doesn't wear fur; so why did PETA get so conservative and minimally controversial when they could have really stirred things up?

It seems PETA figured out a while ago that using graphic pics of tortured or dead animals was not the best way to romance a lot of the people they wanted to reach. And so in recent years we've been seeing more promotional materials that are sexy, hip, stylish, and/or funny, and with each one it can be pretty easy to interpret who they are targeting with a call to join their case.

The first lady photoshopped to appear as if she was a nude pinup girl? I'd think it was fun, but I don't think I'm the type of person they were hoping to reach out to with an ad featuring Oprah and Michelle Obama. In fact, an image of the first lady photoshopped to appear nude would probably alienate the type of person they hope to interest with this ad. This poster seems to have a goal of drawing upscale "classy lady" types to their cause, with an emphasis most likely on the over 30 demographic. (Pic below of Cloris Leachman seems to be another ad hoping to target a similar type of audience). The ad you show seems to also be looking to target the black community...

A purple dress! And cabbage too! I like that one.

They probably know their demographics. I'm way over thirty; but, I'm a guy, and an ultra liberal one at that, as you may have noticed.

I'd like to propose PETA Advertisement Campaigns as a great starting point for that :)

I'm sure if we looked around, we'd find a PETA ad designed especially with you in mind :-)

I'm sure it would have stirred up more controversy, but I would hope that even PETA has enough sense not to go that far! That sort of campaign would be so totally disrespectful to the presidency. No matter what we personally think of public figures, we need to respect the offices they hold.

I wouldn't have considered it a negative thing for the First Lady to participate in the campaign, or disrespectful to the office of her husband. Wouldn't most of the people who would think it disrespectful to the office be the same ones who are disrespectful to the President themselves?

You have a good point. I don't think there would be anything wrong with her participating in the campaign, but to appear nude (whether for real or photoshopped) would not be appropriate behavior for any First Lady!
