Should parents be consulted before their son's foreskin is sold after circumcision?

I should add I couldn't find anything to back this up, I saw it on manswers.

http://www.spike.com/video/little-snip/3330711

They claim that when a baby is circumcised the left over foreskin is sold. Both of my son's are circumcised and I don't recall signing anything saying they could sell my son's tissue. If this is being done, shouldn't the parents be made aware? Have the choice to choose? and considering the video also claims every foreskin brings in $100,000 ..couldn't the parents even be compensated?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My understanding is that body parts technically have no legal value and are not to be sold. I'm not sure if foreskin would be considered a body "part," or if it would be classified more like tissue or blood (which a donor can be paid for, such as selling sperm or plasma), but either way, selling it (or even taking it) without parental permission seems creepy and immoral.

Cord blood, which is incredibly valuable in the medical community is only used for research with express permission (theoretically) so I would certainly consider this a matter where the parents permission should be explicit and in writing. The tissue should also not be sold, by anyone, in my opinion.

I think about it like this. Even after death we are given the choice (or our loved ones) are given the choice to be a donor. I think that parents should be given the option to choose whether or not their child's DNA gets used for any purpose. We as parents make decisions for our children for everything else. We should choose this as well.

As for compensation, I don't think that there should be any if the item is donated. If I were to pass and my heart was donated, does the doctor charge the new patient for the price of my heart? Does my family receive compensation for that charge? I think not. (If I'm wrong please let me know) So why should a young man's circumcision skin be paid for?

This is simple. If it's consented to be donated, fine. But there shouldn't be a charge or financial gain other than the labor involved in the procedure.

They said that it is only in some high end creams and that it produces a hundred thouand in collagen not that they sell it for a hundred thousand. But in any event I don't think this is legal in the US. I'm pretty sure that unless it's going for transplant or for medical research it has to be incinerated.

So you think that area of the body produces a fine face cream .That idea might catch on ,maybe it already has been tried in the highest office in the land .I wonder?

The claim sounded so absurd that I had to verify it. And it appears to be a valid claim.

So my next question is, who gets that $100,000 if not the family? If the money came to the family that "donated" then that'd be fine. My second insistence would be that people should be able to "opt-out" of the practice if they choose to deny the extra income.

Anyone else profiting off of it (besides the family) is exploitative and unethical. No wonder the general public doesn't know about it. Someone is pocketing $100k and not sharing!

Eh I'd be careful with the source. AC is a writer submitted site, she doesn't list any valid sources either.I'm prone to believe it's true, but I'd like to know for sure because at the very least parents should be made aware that there children's tissue is being used for profit.

I'd hate to see parents start circumcising just to get 100,000.. but.. I could really use 200,000 and I did it for other reasons lol

Okay that video was disturbing. I'm curious as to how true it is. What the tribe does was kind of gross. But I do wonder if hospitals really sell that to cosmetic companies to make face cream. That would seem to me very odd. I don't know though what rights you have to the parts taken off during surgery or if they belong to the hospital. I suppose one could ask to keep them. Or, there might be something in the fine print of the hospital about what happens with it. Maybe it's really a small percentage of places that sell the foreskin and the video is hyping up what happens because it's interesting and gross at the same time - just want the menfolk love.

Should they be told - probably but I don't think that's what really happens to it.
