Should National Coming Out Day should be re-christened International Equality Day.?

Some people feel that a special occasion to mark "coming out" is no longer needed, and that rechristening the day would remove pressure for people to "pigeon-hole" their sexuality. What do you think?

I think that every day should be National Equality Day. Of course I feel that way about Christmas, Easter, 4th of July, Valentine's Day, and Thanksgiving.

I think that how we act toward one another should be the very best that we can do, every day. We should always strive toward equal rights and equal protections for every citizen. I believe we should treat each other with kindness and generosity as if everyday were Christmas (or whatever holiday one might celebrate which reflects generosity of spirit). I submit that we should be thankful for the grace we receive each day. We should all be as patriotic, keeping in mind the principles upon which this country was predicated and being thankful for those who stood in the breach to assure our freedoms, each day. We should tell those we love how we feel daily or better yet, show them. And I think we all have something for which to be thankful every single day, even the bad ones.

I think that if a group truly wants equality and inclusion and touts it, then celebrating who they are is a daily activity, not something by which they set themselves apart from others when what they want is acceptance.

But then, I have odd ideas which border on idealism sometimes.

I can see your point @windowshopping2 - It's just that National Coming Out Day is a great way to raise awareness - just like any other day that tries to raise awareness such as Anti-Child Abuse, Environmental Awareness, Peace, Breast Cancer etc.

Maybe National Coming Out Day and International Equality Day could have separate days of their own. Equality - does not just mean the Gay/Lesbian community - but also gender, ethnic groups, age etc.
