Should Micah Grimes, the girls varsity basketball coach at The Covenant School in Dallas be suspended?

In a high school basketball game against a school for learning challenged kids Coach Grimes ran the score up until it was 100 to 0.

I don't think the coach should be suspended. However, I suspect that he (or she) deserves a fair heaping of bad karma, not to mention bad press. There were plenty of people at that game who could have stepped down and had a word with the coach, and yet it seems like many of the parents were participating in the same, selfish self-appeasement in cheering (egging?) on the lopsided victory. Only someone completely ignorant of the game and the spirit of sportsmanship would think that the girls deserved a 100-0 victory in these conditions. That definitely doesn't teach them any kind of lesson other than to take advantage of those less fortunate for your own personal glory. Definitely not a lesson I'd teach my daughter, nor is it very "Christian."

No.

I think the whole thing is a little ridiculous. If anyone is to blame it is Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools who arranged the game and set up the rules lacking the "mercy rule" that would have ensured that the score did not get so lopsided.

Either a sport is a competition where you strive to do your best; or it is about having fun. It appears that this was set up as a competition.

In an after note, this is apparently a long time problem, especially in high school women's basketball with Christian Private schools.

From a 2004 New York Times article, "But many high school coaches and state sports officials say that blowouts have become a significant problem in high school girls' basketball. ... The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that nearly 20 percent of more than 500 girls' basketball games in Cincinnati this season have been blowouts, with the victors scoring at least 30 points more than the losers."

After reading the article, I definitely say that the coach should NOT be penalized in any form.

wrong. it comes down to the morality and integrity of the players, the coaches and the parents. rules and laws throughout history have been immoral and it has been up to the person to find it within themselves to do the right thing. i write this as a person who plays competitive sports.

No, I don't think that she should be suspended. However, I do think that she (and the rest of the coaching staff) acted in poor judgment. Thankfully, this story has gotten some media attention so that a lesson can be learned from it. As a teacher, I have seen coaches who, all too often, lose sight of the real focus of their job and concentrate solely on winning. I don't think it was unethical to run the score up by so much, but I don't think it was very sportsmanlike either.

Also, I think the fact that the opposing school specializes in learning challenged students is irrelevant. A lot of "learning challenged" students are great athletes so adding that spin to the story is unfair. The fact that they have learning disabilities, like dyslexia, has nothing to do with their loss record.

so these girls all just suck at basketball so bad they could not score a single basket and coincidentally have ld?

Have either of you been a point guard?

I did not say sports are mindless. I said that having learning disabilities, like dyslexia which is a learning disorder related to reading and writing, has nothing to do with athletic ability.

I have taught MANY students with "learning disabilities" who excel in various sports.

It did not say these girls were mentally or developmentally delayed in anyway just that they were "learning challenged," which is usually understood to mean common classroom learning disabilities.

I agree with demanda. I have a Master's Degree in Special Education and from what I read in the article the students had no diagnosis that would affect their ability to play and understand sports. LD's are defined by the fact that the student has a NORMAL IQ but suffers from some deficit (such as writing, reading, etc.)

That link doesn't work.
I would argue that their basketball record has more to do with the size of their school than any learning disabilities. This school in question only has TWENTY girls total in the school. Students are sent to this school because of academic need, they are not recruited for their sports ability.

I think u misunderestimate the amount of learning that goes on during a basketball practice, but it's easy to understand why one might think sports are mindless, or that is to say, the sum ability of a team is entirely measured by athletic ability.

http://tinyurl.com/cm798u should work, no idea how the ; got in there.

No question the size of the school's population must have contributed, nice one.

You have realigned your statement from "nothing to do with" to "more to do with", which is all I was refuting in the first place.

No, he should not be suspended unless he broke any state rules. In Colorado, I am subject to rules on how I conduct my practices and games for high school soccer. There is a mercy rule in soccer and many other sports. If there are no other rules that he broke he should not be suspended regardless of what type of school it was.

Point shaving is now being encouraged at the covenant school, let the other team score, don't score when you have the chance, sounds like point shaving to me. Win if you can but only by a little bit. Maybe we can get the college and professional teams to point shave as well so the other team won't develop a inferiority complex. Oh geez, i just remembered no one let the detroit lions win a game this past year, but maybe some teams let them score so they wouldn't feel so bad. So yea, it's ok to point shave in high school but remember kids once you leave high school don't do it anymore cause that would be illegal

No. Even with some unanswered questions such as did the coach play all of the players. Did the losing coach have anything to say to the winning coach at half time?

If there is no mercy rule then what would be the acceptable position to take? I was on a bar league softball team that never won a game in the 4 years I was on it. My team always showed up early and did the other teams take pity on us because we were drunk ? Never . Did running with a beer can slow us down ? Some. Did we have fun anyway? Yes.

Small schools expect to lose most of the time . I didn't read about the losing team being in tears or any fights breaking out. The winning team probably had never been close to scoring 100 points in a game before and it seemed like a good idea to be able to say they did.

I bet the winning team stopped playing tough defense early. If there were more than a few fouls then the coach could have stopped aggressive defense.

It is a game . Have fun.

No. The mantra of American school sports is "WIN! WIN! WIN!". You could probably be fired for holding back. They won fair and square.
Now whoever set up the game, they should be questioned as to why. Or if it was a league that the dislexic girls wanted to join, well, losses are inevitable

Wonder if the school has the same policy regarding academics?
If they participated in television shows like " It's Academic " where one team's knowledge of subjects is pitted against teams from other schools, If covenant's team answered every question before the other team, would that be running up the score ? Oh yea, they keep score in those competitions too. Would the staff at covenant be equally ashamed of the academic team ?
