Should Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa be asking the public for help?

A budget crisis pushed the city to ask the public for help in paying for security at the Michael Jackson memorial. It set up a Web site where fans can donate. The city is hoping to recoup some of the estimated $2 million to $4 million it cost to have thousands of police and firefighters on hand in case of an emergency. Should Villaraigosa be asking for help from the public?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

We have a city chock full of celebrities. We are going to have more than the average number of events that require public services.

If the event is revenue generating, the companies that make money should pay for extra services, just like film crews on location and commercial events do today.

When a private event that is not revenue generating needs extra support, the city should budget for this.

According to LAPD Chief Bratton, the released a thousand officers from duty when the crowds did not materialize before the event, and another 1000 when things ran smoothly after the event.

I think it is tacky to ask for donations, no matter what the climate.

Absolutely, the city is bankrupt and they had to bear the brunt of this, without help they will have to lay off some of those Police and Firefighters. I think they should have made someone pay for it beforehand (like the promoter or Staples Center) Generally cities bill for services for big events, this should be no different.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is asking fans of Michael Jackson to kick in and offset the $4 million it will cost the city to cover the city's costs associated with the funeral and memorial.. well i don't think he should be asking the public for help..
