Should Ken Griffey Jr. retire before the end of the season?

Ken Griffey Jr. has had an amazing career, but as most Major League Baseball fans know, he has had quite a few injuries in the tail end of his career. He had off-season knee surgery this winter, and since the season started he hasn’t been much of a hitter. Griffey has only hit .208 with just two extra base hits this year and it is now being reported that he has actually taken naps inside the team’s clubhouse during games.

Should he be allowed to retire after this season, or should he be asked to step down as soon as possible. Or should he just be cut and allowed to retire whenever he feels like calling it a career?

Everyone reaches a time in their career when it is time to call it quits. For some it is much harder to accept the fact that it is time to go, than it is for others. Then also, there are maybe financial problems none of us are aware of that have him holding on for that last paycheck. How often have you read where an athlete has either blown their money or been cheated by an advisor or investor? None of us really know what is inside Griffery’s head, but in my opinion he should have hung them up a couple years ago. What he is leaving in the fans’ memories is a picture of an old man, with skills so diminished that he is more of a hinderance to his team than an asset; not what a Hall of Famer should be doing. If he is sleeping in the clubhouse, then there may be a reason for it other than being just plain tired. If not then he is not even being part of the team. Bottom line to me is that he has had a great career, but he needs to realize that it is over. He should leave the game now, on his terms rather than being released. Seattle may no release him because of all his accomplishments, but that may be a mistake as they struggle to find their offense.

Ken Griffey Jr should retire this season if his play continues to be so poor. At the same time, I think the team has every right to release Griffey is his performance continues to hinder the Mariners. For a future Hall of Fame player, I think retiring on their own terms is the best way, saves from a bit of embarassment, if there is such a thing for a Hall of Fame player. Griffey's performance mimics that of Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. He was batting .209 with just 6 home runs through late May and decided to retire unexpectedly before a series against the San Diego Padres. Griffey's numbers are similar and the same time of the season with the exception of the home runs this season. He should step down, relish the great career he has had and enjoy the next five years until the election into the Hall of Fame.

Ken Griffey Jr. has nothing to prove any more for he already made remarkable achievements in the league.
Michael Jordan retired even he still has some gas left for another championship to preserve his lofty milestones and achievements he had whipped out.
Griffey could’ve done the same time few years ago.
Now he is bound to retire at the point where his career is at its lows and downs and even slowed down by injuries as well. He is no longer the same Griffey that bats the ball with crispness and sheer power.
If he is no longer effective on the team’s cause he should step down and he should not be bothered since he already made great contributions to the sports and to the league. Otherwise the team might cut him as soon as possible and as I said earlier there is nothing embarrassing doing this since the overall performance of his team is at stake here.
