Should Kelloggs have issued a recall instead of an advisory?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Just thinking back to the salmonella issue this past Summer. People were going nuts and the tomato growers, and distributors suffered, and then they found that it might not have been tomatoes, but peppers.

Also, the original manufacturer of the Peanut Butter has not yet determined which lots might be the root cause, which would help determine what, if any subsequent product might be affected.

My initial thought was an emphatic "yes", but then I considered that Kelloggs must have legal counsel. If there were a reason to actually recall the products, I have to believe their legal team would have advised them to do so.

This is just based on experience working in the corporate world. (I once had a former employer's legal team refuse to allow me to use a balance ball for a desk chair. They feared I might injure myself and sue them.)

No. At this point, they don't know what is causing the outbreak. They think it might be peanut butter, but they don't know.

So, if they issued a recall and it turned out to be something else, then they have lost a lot of money for no good reason. That would then be passed on to us in higher prices.

By saying "wait" they might lose business, but they are not costing themselves millions of dollars.

While a lot of people have gotten sick (400) and 5 have died, I don't think that people should panic until the exact cause is found.

Of course, I realize as I am writing this that I am eating Reese's peanut butter cups....but I'm fairly certain that chocolate is capable of curing you of salmonella....right?
