Should Joe Paterno retire?

After Bobby Bowden apparently coached until he was no longer the kind of college head coach who delivered wins whenever the program needed it, has Joe Paterno also crossed that path? It doesn’t seem to me that Paterno is actually the head coach of Penn State anymore so much as he is the head administrator in charge of football. He doesn’t wear a head set, he doesn’t send in the plays, he yells at players if they screw up, but otherwise he seems removed from coaching. Should he just step down?

I think he should coach as long as he feels like it as long as the team keeps winning. You say that he yells at the players if they screw up, which he should. You say that he "seems" removed from coaching. Do you know that he's not "coaching" anymore? I do believe he is the administrator in charge of football, probably does a lot more delegating of responsibilities to his assistant coaches. I am not with the team on a day in and day out basis to see how much coaching he does in practice. But like I said before, as long as kids want to go to Penn State and it appears they want to as they are always ranked high in recruiting and the team keeps winning, what's the point of him stepping down? Joe Paterno has done so much for that university and its program that he really deserves to be there as long as he wants to be there.

If they're winning, then he should stay. I don't doubt that the assistant coaches are doing the majority of the coaching, and I think they deserve a lot more credit. BUT ... if Joe leaves, then so will a lot of those assistant coaches. Some want to stick with Joe and love being a part of his dynasty. And even if they don't, they may get booted off the coaching roster if another head coach came in.

So, when I hear Joe Paterno, I think Joe Paterno and staff. I think he should stick around because I think the entire staff is still doing well.
