Should I upgrade my 9-year-old cable modem?

Will replacing my old cable model give me faster download/upload speeds? Comcast is my service provider (if that really matters).
Tip for best answer: M$2.00

Are you getting anywhere close to your purchased speed? If yes, then leave it alone. If not, call tech support and complain that the cable modem is sluggish, keep pestering them until they send you a tech. The techs are lazy, they'll see your 9-year wonder and decide it is less trouble to replace it with a new unit than to try to figure out what is wrong with it.

If your modem is 9 years old it will probably fail very soon. I would replace it. You will likely see better speeds as cable modem standards have changed over the last 9 years.

I can tell you that here on Maui, if you call Time-Warner and ask for an updated modem, they will send you a new one that has wi-fi.

Thanks for the answers everyone. Two things I should note: I own the modem and I am also behind a wireless router. Should I plug-in directly to the modem when I do the speedtest?

I don't think you'll see too much of a speed increase, unless Comcast has significantly upgraded your advertised speed in a while.

Go to this web page: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and see what kind of speed you get with your modem. Try to do it late at night or early in the morning, because during the evening you will tend to get slower speeds (because you share your cable line with a number of other people in the neighborhood, and most of them will be using it during primetime).

If your speed is well below the speed that Comcast advertises, then see if you can trade in your modem for a new one. Comcast will lease you a modem for a few bucks a month (or you can buy one elsewhere, as long as it's Comcast-compatible). But my guess is you won't see a significant increase.

Do you own your modem, or do you rent it? Cause if you own your modem, it may not be worth updating depending on your current speed. If you rent your modem, your best bet would be to give it back to comcast and buy your own.

Generally people pay ~$5 monthly to rent their modem:

$5 X 12months X 9 years = $540. (I really hope you weren't renting)

So at that rate, if you are renting, and you then purchase your own, it pays for itself in just one year.

---Just a thought.

On the hardware itself, I'm sure technology has come far from where it was 9 years ago, so I think it's a safe bet you'll see some sort of increase in performance or reliability.
