Should I upgrade my 9-year-old cable modem?

M$Go to this web page: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and see what kind of speed you get with your modem. Try to do it late at night or early in the morning, because during the evening you will tend to get slower speeds (because you share your cable line with a number of other people in the neighborhood, and most of them will be using it during primetime).
If your speed is well below the speed that Comcast advertises, then see if you can trade in your modem for a new one. Comcast will lease you a modem for a few bucks a month (or you can buy one elsewhere, as long as it's Comcast-compatible). But my guess is you won't see a significant increase.

M$Generally people pay ~$5 monthly to rent their modem:
$5 X 12months X 9 years = $540. (I really hope you weren't renting)
So at that rate, if you are renting, and you then purchase your own, it pays for itself in just one year.
---Just a thought.
On the hardware itself, I'm sure technology has come far from where it was 9 years ago, so I think it's a safe bet you'll see some sort of increase in performance or reliability.
