Should I pay the $24.95 a year for a Flickr Pro account or is there a better/cheaper alternative photo sharing service?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

- There are a lot of people already using that service. That's important if you want to share your photos.
- There are a of great apps/services that tie into Flickr (examples: Apple TV, Flock, a multitude of mobile apps, many many desktop widgets, many web embeddable widgets.)

Google's web albums are good too... there is of course the free version but for $20 per year, you get 10 gigs that you can use across Google's service. Personally, I like Picasa, so the $20 per year google tax is well worth it.

Good answer. I concur with your reasoning.
Also, flickr has great support for tagging and EXIF, not so great for geotagging.
You can get plugins for programs like iPhoto or Lightroom to upload directly from there.
Also, once you have uploaded your photos, even if you don't renew your subscription, they keep your photos for when you do eventually re-subscribe.
The online community there is great as well, with lots of interest groups. Join the group for your particular camera and you can get help from fellow users.
