Should I let my baby transition straight from breastfeeding to sippy cup?

My second son Rafe is a really odd duck. He is 5 months old and absolutely loathes bottles. He won't even think about using one, however he just mastered floor scooting (almost crawling woo-hoo) and found one of my first sons sippy cups. To my surprise he snatched it up rolled over and just went to town. I'm not sure if it was the juice he liked or that he likes the cups. I'm now considering using a sippy cup rather than a bottle in the weaning process, is this a good idea? is it safe? What are the risks and benefits?

I think it's perfectly fine to transition from breast to sippy cup. If you infant is comfortable drinking his formula from a sippy cup that should make life a bit easier for you too. Start with weaning your baby off his morning feeding and offering the sippy cup and cereal. Once you have mastered the morning feeding transition then move to the bedtime ritual. As the mother you will know exactly what is right for you and your baby. Good luck with the transition. Oh and it might be tougher on you than it is for your baby because you may miss that special time.

I don't see why not. After 5 months your son has already gotten all the exercise he is supposed to get from sucking. I bet his lungs and facial muscles are plenty strong and he has excellent air control. The other important thing was to breast feed for at least three months so that your son got his immunities from you, which you have already done. I agree with the other poster: probably the only one who won't be satisfied with your son using a sippy cup will be you, because you will miss your special times with him!

(My mom is a registered nurse who specializes in baby care, and so I am well-versed in all this, even though I have no children of my own, heh!)

Wow it sounds like your baby Rafe is a very smart little boy already. I do not see a problem with this transition at all. You might have a hard time with you breaast and enjoying the special moments with him, but all around I think he is very intellegent. One thing you might want to be careful with is his teeth. I know that using a sippy cup can mess his teeth up if he is a long time user, so being he is only 5 months old that might be something to consider. I have heard of using the sippy cup for a long time can push their little teeth forward causing problems. I might ask my doctor too for his opinion.

Good Luck and what a smart little guy you have !!
