I think that the punishment should be the same whether one kills humans or animals. Either way, you are ending a life for no apparent reason. Murder is Murder.
Those caught being abusive to animals (chicken fighting, dog fighting, etc.) should be thrown in a pit to fight for their own lives. Maybe then, they will appreciate the joy of life.
