Should Don Cherry Retire?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think Don Cherry is a hockey icon and his commentaries would be greatly missed if he chose to end his commentator career. Although his hockey playing was not stellar, his insights into the game as well as his sometimes brutally frank comments contributes to the popularity of the CBC sports show, "Hockey Night in Canada" year after year. Watching a game on CBC and hearing Don Cherry's pro-Canadian team comments and seeing his fashion contribution in the Well dressed Man category is a treat. Don Cherry's wardrobe may not be the choice for most hockey fans, but he wears the most outrageous outfits well. I doubt that Don Cherry considers what he does in the hockey world as a job. In March of 2010 a made for TV movie, called, "Keep Your Head Up Kid: The Don Cherry Story" was released. Written by his son, the story gives a greater insight into the heart and tenacity of Don Cherry, and endears him even more to the hockey fan. In 2004, Don Cherry was determined to be the 7th greatest Canadian of all time in a CBC poll. Asking if Don Cherry should retire is like asking if Don Cherry should stop breathing, thinking, and living.

I think it's up to Don Cherry when he should retire. He's been an icon in the hockey industry for many years. He played with several teams in several leagues from 1954 through 1972. He started announcing for CBC in 1981 as a color commentator. He hosted a syndicated show titled Don Cherry's This Week in Hockey in 1987 - 1988. He has been a mainstay on Hockey Night in Canada for a long time and still does a credible job. Asking him to retired would compare to asking the legendary football announcer John Madden to retire. Madden did retire, but it was on his own terms, noone fired him. I think the legends, even if they might not be as good as they once were, should have the right to say when they step down and not be forced to leave. Cherry should have input into hockey for as long as he feels capable of doing so.
