Unfortunately, yes. Here you've got a private company that's basically making the play that they are more powerful than the government. Government's gotta demonstrate that this is not true. At the end of the day, if you generally believe that our government is a good thing that in general does the right thing, then they've got to win battles like this.

The first answer that jumps into everyone's mind is "Yes! Why should I, a taxpayer, pay for someone's bonus?"

There are many executives that don't deserve bonuses based on their poor performance. However, in tough economic times, it's very important for companies to keep good employees. Top executives might leave for another company if bonuses aren't paid in full, which would further hurt AIG.

Bonuses need to be considered on a case by case basis. The questions that should be asked:

1. Is this one of the executives who is responsible for problems in the company?
2. Would this executive leave if they didn't get a full bonus?
3. Would the loss of this executive harm the company more than paying the bonus?

Simply using a knee-jerk reaction and taxing all bonuses might do more harm than good.

No, it is a knee jerk emotional response, we think we are getting them but are opening the door to future tax laws created on a whim

Yes! Why should the taxpayers be paying execs who ruined the company in the first place?

Bonuses are usually a reward for meeting established performance goals. Now how can anyone be entitled to a bonus based on performance when their division of the company is directly responsible for bankrupting the business? If someone legitimately earned a bonus they should be paid but if not obviouslys they should not be getting any bonus!
