Should Citigroup pay oil futures trader Andrew Hall his $100m contractual bonus after taking $45b in government aid?

Tip for best answer: M$5.10
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Do contracts not mean anything anymore? Didn't the govt ask about all outstanding obligations and know what they were paying for? Of course they should pay or we should throw out the Constitution.

The government should be treated like a shareholder, and shareholders only care about the value of their investment, if that bonus would affect Citigroup negatively then shareholders must vote against it.
In my opinion they should give him his bonus because if they didn't they will lose this trader to another competitor, and no one will work for any gov. aided company again, so wall street then will lose its competitive advantage over other financial centers.

Yes, he should get what he contracted for. The real question is whether or not the Citigroup management should still be in place.

Andrew Hall should definitely get his $100 million. Keep in mind that he made them quite a bit of money, and is known as a god in the trading community. If he doesn't get paid, he'll be off making that $100 million again somewhere else in the blink of an eye, and Citigroup would have a tough time finding a replacement. Of course, terminating a contract when you do indeed have funding isn't really ethical either, but that's just another reason to pay up.
