I remember reading it as a child and being pretty scared of many of the images that the words conjured up.
The 'family friendly' animated version produced in the 1950's softened the story fairly substantially in my opinion.
The new movie is a Tim Burton, Johnny Depp one set with a 19yo Alice.
From the trailers expect more 'Sleepy Hollow' than disney Alice in Wonderland.
I would doubt that it will appeal to pre-teenagers and it is rated 'PG' too....
