Should a mother who refuses to have her sick son treated for cancer be arrested?

IMHO, no. If the parents give the child the same level of care they afford themselves, I see no hypocrisy.
If I don't wish to live on a ventilator and feeding tubes, I wouldn't want that treatment for my child. My child is under my care.
If the ailment was a shard of glass in the kid's eye....well that's a different story.
With cancer you're dealing with quality of life. If you have 5 years to live, do you want it to be with expensive chemo? Sleeping in hospitals. Watching your family work two or three jobs and live in squalor to give you a _chance_ at slightly prolonged suffering? No guarantee. Just a chance.
Ask yourself, what is the reason for arrest. If you're going to throw the parent in jail and take custody of the child, you need a complaint filed by an individual, or charges brought by the state. What is the complaint? What are the charges?
Or, is the intent to teach a lesson. Wake them up. Well...then you're guilty of arrest without intent to prosecute...a waste of time, money, and the goodwill of law enforcement. The cops don't need any more reasons for people to hate them. Arrests for the sake of harassment definitely don't fall under the guidelines "to serve and protect".
When it comes down to it, if it's such a big deal, then step up and say something. Be prepared to be ignored. Insulted. It really isn't your place to raise someone else's child. But, if your actions help a kid...it's good in the end.
It's pretty chicken to call on the law just to voice dissent.
