Should 911 taped calls be released to the media, or kept private?

Tip for best answer: M$0.65
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The majority of 911 calls should always remain private. What happens in an emergency is not only a private matter for the victim, if it is a medical matter, then it is also covered by HIPPA laws the same as information from a hospital. Patients medical information cannot be released without consent from the patient.

In calls that do not involve medical issues, but that might involve say domestic violence or something, the victim does not need to be traumatized again by hearing the 911 call being broadcast by the media. The majority of things that require a 911 call in the first place are intimitly private and should remain that way.

If a 911 call is grossly mismanaged where it causes death from something that could have been prevented by the dispatcher or paramedics, then if the victims request it, I can see releasing the tapes to the media to try and prevent calls like this from happening again.

Have worked 8 years as a firefighter and EMT and have seen many calls that would not have done well being made public. have also been on the reciving end and in the ambulance and would not have wanted my call made public, as I was victimized enough.

Thanks for the insight as a responder to the calls. I agree with most of what you said. Here in Florida we had a man have to hear himself all over the news the day after he called 911 after finding his son who committed suicide. There is no reason to make the calls public except for the public morbid interest.

In the case of an emergency, should we have to worry abou choosing our words carefully because we might hear the call on the radio the next day or in the news?

Ethically, it should be the decision of the victim who calls the police. If the victim is unable to make the decision, the family could, hopefully toward the right ends. Alternately, the victim and family could defer to the police department's decision. If all 3 connected parties don't particularly care, the media could do with it as they may.

i agree, but also feel strongly that unless the victim or his/her family give permission the tape should NOT EVER be given to the media.

I agree cat, never without consent unless their is some legal action where the tape is evidence of some kind, and then still should only be played for the court.

Threats from terrorist including important information that someone could identify via media should be allowed. Private calls from one person to the next should not. The government does not have the constitutional right to invade on your privacy with out a warrant in the first place, and it is very much ethically wrong to make that information public.

Hearing the call on the news entertains and informs, but I'll bet that if it were commonplace people might hesitate to call when they really need to.
