Freecycle.org is a community that allows members to give away (absolutely free!) any of their unwanted items. There are thousands of groups that are based on location to make finding local freecyclers super-easy. Not only does it help people get rid of unwanted things or find things they need for free, it's also a green way to shop because no waste is involved.

You can find a freecycling group near you here:

It's a system where people might offer up things they don't need and at the same time post requests for stuff they need at no cost.

For example, if someone has an old, 70s era ugly sofa, they might post such to a local FreeCycle, and they might find someone who loves such sofas and who will even come and haul it away. By the same token, if you're looking for something like an old computer monitor or other stuff, someone who happens to have one lying around in a closet might reply and then offer it up to you to pick up.

It's nice because a lot of "junk" which normally might end up in a landfill instead finds new life at someone else's home. The old adage "One man's junk is another man's treasure" applies to FreeCycle.
