An ideal pair of skates for men who are new to skating, the fitness-oriented K2 Exo 2.1 skates combine a superior fit with topnotch performance. The skates are built around K2's proprietary Softboot--considered the standard cup at K2--with standard ankle lacing, a stability cuff, and an Exo composite frame. Each skate also includes a power strap that wraps around the ankle along with an adjustable buckle, adding to the snugness of the fit. And thanks to the 78 mm wheels and ABEC 5 bearings, skaters are assured of a smooth, controlled ride every time they hit the pavement. The skates, which come in a variety of sizes, are backed by a one-year warranty.

But if you really want the skates now, you might try a sporting-goods reseller or consignment shop. Used skates are going to be cheaper than new ones...and if you're squicked out by the idea of putting your feet into the skates after some stranger's been using them, you can replace the removable boot shell/liner/whatever it's called with a new one and be good to go.

I drive by a Play It Again sports gear store almost every day, so that is the first place I thought of. They carry new and used sports gear. Great way to explore a new sport without laying out a lot of cash. You can also trade up your old gear or resell gear for activities you have lost interest in.

I found my gently-used pair of Rollerblades (the actual brand) for three bucks at a thrift store. This is a crapshoot at best, of course, because the odds of a local thrift store having the skates that you want, in your size, in acceptable condition, aren't very high. However, you never know when you'll luck into something. If you don't want the skates RIGHT NOW, you can pop back into the thrift stores in your area once or twice a week, just to see if they've gotten anything interesting in stock. But if you really want the skates now, you might try a sporting-goods reseller or consignment shop.
