Electronics always work. Digital cameras or camcorders, iphones, watches, clothes, music, GPS, and food are some that do the trick.

It depends on how much you are able to spend, but I would say that anything small that comes from the heart is much better than something expensive. Fathers adore their children; even just a little reminder of how much you love him or a small surprise from a child to their parent makes even the toughest guy's heart melt. If it's possible, you could surprise him with breakfast or coffee (show some care and spare him from that work), a bar of chocolate (or his favorite candy) or a card that you drew for him. It might sound silly, but lovely little treats often work better than expensive gifts or tools. Even if the candies will be eaten (unlike tools and cameras that last long) the memory of this sweet day will stay with him forever.
