I went to http://www.amazon.com to check it out because they often have great prices and selection and when you click on HD DVD in the additional formats they tell you that
"HD DVD has since been discontinued. Blu-ray is recognized as the current standard high-def format. Learn more about Blu-ray at (High-Def Headquarters.)"
So I am assuming you mean the HD DVD format and not Blu-ray. Probably for Blu-ray they would have some great deals.
Here is where I would suggest as a good place to check out for cheap HD DVD movies http://www.filmbaby.com/
Here is their motto:
"Film Baby is a haven for independent filmmakers and those that love independent film. We have a love for the intensity, honesty and integrity that comes from working on a small budget film."
They have over 2,000 Independent films. If you put the words HD in their search box, you will get a selection of films, and when you click more info you will see that the HD will appear in the format column.
There is a wide range of genres. This is also a personal choice. Just because the movies cost less because they don't have huge advertising, cast, production and special effects costs does not mean that they can't be really interesting and worthwhile movies. There are probably other places that sell indie films if this is your preference which you can find in web searches. Another option if you like documentary specials or made for TV movies might be to look up a particular documentary tv series or show or special and buy episodes from the broadcast station.
However, if only Hollywood big budget style movies are your favorites, then I would suggest the closest big box music discount store in your area if they carry HD DVD still would be a good option. If you do not mind used films, your local movie rental place if they still offer HD DVD format would probably be the best price in their bargain bin of used movies, and especially if the store is going to cancel HD DVDs, you will be able to pick up some real bargains as they get rid of all of their stock and it may not all be used stock.
You said buy movies, but the cheapest way to view movies if they carry that format by far is to borrow it from your public library where it is likely free unless you have to pay an overdue fine for bringing it back late.
Hope that helps.
