Shopping for a Christmas toy for a 5 year old, what's hot this season ($25-$75)?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I recommend you visit http://www.amazon.com/toys and click on the toys under $75 there. Or visit this link http://bit.ly/AmazonToys and choose the 5-7 year old category. It's really neat because you can virtually browse. This is the best way to find the best toys online.

Some hot toys include: Eye Clops, Wii Music, Pulse Nitrous Scooter, Loud Enough Earphones, U-Dance, Mongoose, Blokus, Shrek, Transformers Bike, Hyper Dash, and LeapFrog Tag Reading System.

There are lots of great options! Best of luck finding the best toy for a 5 year old! Happy Holidays!

Eye Clops is an excellent educational toy and it's relatively cheap for its capability.

Wii Music... NO! It's a piece of crud...

Anyway, you need a Wii system to play it.

The
leapster 2 and the Leapster Didj. Since you didn't say if the 5 year old was a boy or a girl, It's hard to give recommendations. The Leapster Didj you can get popular games for boys and girls such as Hannah Montana, Star Wars, Sonic the Hedgehog.

My son is 5 and he put together a long list for Santa Claus. It follows below with his spelling:

1MARIO BASEBALL GAME.
2KUNG FU PANDA GAME
3COLORING BOOK.
4TRANSFORMER TOY.
5RAVING RAVBBIDS TV.
6WII MUSIC.
7CAR TOY.
8MONSTERTRAC
9TRACTION.
10PLAYDONE.
11IGNITR.
12GatrGjf.-SONIC
13PictUREKA
14MONOPOLY.
(My son would sometime pause our DVR and copy the names from commercials.)

My boy was most vocal about the Wii Baseball Slugger and Raving Rabbids games as well as the Transformers' Bumble Bee toy. I found out that you can find hard to find toys at collector stores, but at a premium price. I paid $90 for the large Bumble Bee Transformer toy.

BEN 10! the animated cartoon series DVD's. lol. My 5 yr. old got ME addicted to this show. Otherwise a good old fashioned board game that you participate in with him/her is a standard. Chess and or checkers. Once they understand the strategy, they grasp onto the game. At least mine did.

Amongst the "hottest" and "best" toys for a child that age are the Fisher Price digital camera($60) a Leap Frog Tag reading system, bnased on their reading skillls($50)

At the higher end is Fisher Price Smart Cycle, where a "bike" is hooked up to a TV/Computer and the faster they ride the more they achieve...god hand eye coordination, and exercise ($90)

There are dozens of lists on line, and check the ads at the Toys R Us/Wal Mart/Targets, etc.

They might be hard to find

You know, as a mom of 3 ages 4-12, I find that the "hottest" toys often are the ones that end up forgotten on the floor, to become expensive fragments that pierce my husband's feet the next time someone calls out for water in the middle of the night (true story--ER trip required!).

So now, I go with two things: their interests and the recommendations of the Oppenheim Toy Review. The Oppenheims do not accept any money or products from toy companies, so they can be objective. They play test the toys with children, parents and teachers so they can get three different views of each toy, book, and software they review. And they keep an eye on things like developmental appropriateness, whether the toy does the playing for them or whether it helps them develop creativity and imagination; whether it helps developmental skills; if it's safe and if it's fun! The toys I have bought on their recommendation have been played with months and even years later, through three kids.

And the thing about their interests: give one boy toy cars and he'll play for hours, but give him dinosaur stuff and he'll yawn, while his brother might be just the opposite. No matter how hot a toy is, if it's not something the child is interested in, they won't play with it. So ask their parents!
