Yes, it is possible to live without sex. It is very difficult at times, but currently, it has been over a year since I have had sex. I do not seek it out nor do I allow conditions to occur to allow me to have sex. It isn't because I don't want sex, but because I do not wish to involve myself with another person on that level. I am broken so to speak. I cannot fathom interaction that does not include a very specific person and that person... well... she is gone.

Sex IS important in life because it is how we continue on, both as a people and as individuals.
As a people, it is, of course, how our species survives.
As individuals, it is important for forging the deeper and more personal connections to another person that is gratifying to both people (if your doing it right) and opens a piece of you up to them: a very private and personal piece.
On the other hand, sex also relieves stress (again, if you're doing it right). Frustration and anxiety melt away as you reach a state of bliss and satisfaction.
Of course, if your doing it wrong or are with a partner you can not stand sexually, it will only make matters worse.

Finally, procreation is one of the ways we, as individuals, continue our existence in the world... our legacy as it were.

individuals can live, but the human race would not thrive. Sex is essential for procreation. Plus sex can give you a deeper connection with other people.

Sex is important because is an accumulated body energy that must flow through you, because all the accumulation in the body must be removed by your organism. It's like tensions in your head.
Let's take an example, to understand better the situation: imagine that your had is a pot full of boiling water (the boiling water represents sexual energy, or tensions accumulated in time in you). What should the water do? Exactly, the water will flow out the pot. Because this is the natural course of energy, to flow and to transform, like we know from physics.
It's the same with sex: you have accumulated a lot of energy (the compulsion to make sex is the compulsion to eliberate energy, if you pay attention to the process), and you need to let that energy flow. Yes, it's a strong force, because man don't know how to control that, it doesn't exist a method to cotrol something out of our mind. And the question is: what should we do in a relationship? We'll let us drive by the sex? Ofcourse not, in fact, you have the understand this simple process of transforming and eliberating energy, and the control will be something easy to do. But the first step is understanding, understanding is that thing that give you the freedom to choose what to do with sex and with your energy in general.

The flow of energy in the body does not necessitate a release. The human body is very proficient at recycling and redirecting energies, some of which can be done consciously. This same philosophy was used in the 1800's (and earlier) in medicine. Doctors believed that it was necessary to relieve pressure by drilling holes in the skull and bleeding their patients. Fortunately we've learned that approach is vitally wrong. There are some who believe that retaining vital sexual fluids is healthy and life-prolonging would your "boiling pot" analogy apply to them too? They would disagree wholeheartedly. So while it's interesting to have a personal opinion on the topic one way or the other, until science can back up one approach or another there is no "one answer fits all". But it's important to point out that there is no "damaging" evidence so abstinence is an option just as not masturbating is a choice.Besides if the body needs to "release or explode", every little boy learns early on that's what wet dreams are for - no manual intervention required. There is a book that helps people redirect and understand the energy flows in the human body, check it out sometime (highly recommended): http://www.amazon.com/LOVER-WITHIN-Opening-Energy-Practice/dp/1581770170

Sex is important because our species evolved with a sexual form of reproduction. If you were an amoeba you wouldn't care about sex. But, being a typical large animal, specifically a mammal, a human is designed to have sex. There are lots of details, even perhaps exceptions, but basically the desire for sex is built into our brains.

An individual human can live without sex but will be mentally ill and will not properly enjoy life.

It is possible that under circumstance of overcrowding or shortage of food, we may have mechanisms built in to reduce reproduction and therefor sex.

However, the answers to your questions are we naturally desire sex because it is vital to our form of reproduction, and, an individual can live without sex but will suffer from the lack.

Sex is important because it feels good. It is true-- having sex releases endorphin which creates a good mood. Humans who choose to live without sex are denying themselves basic biological happiness.

And while that is true, some people simply possess a lower sex drive than others.

To some degree, yes. But, completely without? I find that hard to believe. The reason I find it hard to believe is because of the benefits that happen from having sex. There are health and exercise benefits, mood stimulating benefits, romantic closeness, deepening of affections, and last but not least; procreation. Sex is 50% of any romantic relationship, those who say otherwise refuse to acknowledge what science already knows.

I hope this helps. :)

Because it's fun. Why would you want to live without sex? As sexual anaimals, sex is part of who we are. To deny that part is often dangerous and can lead to disaster. You don't need to be a dog humping everything you see, but sex is fun and good for your health. Enjoy!
