I have a Singer Starlet machine that my husband bought for me 28 years ago. It has been the best little machine ever and does all the basic stitches. It folds up into it's own carrying case and is very easy to use. I've seen the newfangled computerized ones out there and decided that I won't even venture to look at them more closely until my Starlet fails me which does not seem to be happening anytime soon. I would estimate that I use it about 20-25 times a year on large and small projects. If you look it up on eBay or the net it is now collectible ! So I think I'll hold onto it a bit longer !

I have a Brother CS 6000i (Love IT) and a Futura CE250 (Like it) and an antique Singer (that I never use) and a Singer Ultralock (that stinks and I hate it). I got the brother because it has a ton of stitches and is computerized with a needle up down function that I love. I got the futura because for the price it was the best machine to do what I wanted. It does embroidery and basic sewing with a ton of decorative stitches. The machien you want depends on what you want to make with it and what you want to spend.

The needle up down function is indispensable, especially for applique and free motion work.

I have been using a vintage (I mean antique) straight-stitch Singer sewing machine for years. I love this little work horse, but recently, I had to have it cleaned and the tension adjusted for the third time in a year, custom machines needs maintenance to function better http://www.setpointusa.com/custom-machines.html

I remember lugging that heavy old case home so that I could finish my high school sewing projects. The machine now lives with my aunt in Alaska.
