Back in 1949, the law against pumping one's own fuel was passed because it was decided that this would be safer. If people were pumping their own gas, well, fire hazards could abound, right? Something like that. Remember, this was back in 1949, when safety procedures and methods weren't quite up to par with what we have today.
Of course, more-recent concerns focus on jobs, not safety. Bloomberg.com's article states that, if full service were eliminated in New Jersey, an estimated 36,000 jobs in that state could be in danger.

Does anyone know why its illegal to pump your own gas in New Jersey?
