September 16 every year is observed as World Ozone Day? Your opinions?

The celebration of this day is made to pay our homage to the ozone layer that saves our earth from the harmful ultra-violet radiation of the sun.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My opinion is that International ozone day is an admirable effort to promote a worthy cause. Who can be against clean air and a protected Ozone layer?

First of all, the purpose of the day is to promote efforts to preserve the ozone, not pay homage to the ozone for protecting us.

The efforts seems to originate from the United Nations, which actually has an "Ozone Secretariat" as part of it's Environment Programme. The theme for 2009 is "Universal participation: Ozone protection unifies the world", with activities planned in India, Pakistan and Columbia.

International Ozone Day has it's own Facebook, with a motto of "Save the Ozone Layer~Save our children".

Ozone Day was established on September 16th because that was the signing date of the Montreal Protocol, a landmark international agreement on how to prevent depletion of the Ozone.

To me, it is just 'one of those days'. There are so many 'special' days/weeks/months, that their special meaning has seriously deteriorated.

The 'ozone day' is one of the 'green days', that I won't celebrate. I don't believe in the Ozone hole theory (or at least, I think its influence, cause and effect have been highly overrated), nor do I believe in the ecological footprint calculus.

These are all methods to make us feel 'guilty', and I won't fall for that.

I'm probably sounding like I don't care at all, but I do. I just like to think beyond the easy slogans, and prefer to debate on facts, not on feelings.

This is news to me. I never even heard about it, so for others like me, here goes:

Since 1995 the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer has been celebrated. This year's theme is "Universal participation: Ozone protection unifies the world".

May we stay protected!
