Seeing Al Franken in the senate I ask this: Would Jon Stewart ever consider running to a political position?

Tip for best answer: M$3.30

I could certainly seeing him doing that, given his obvious concern about subjects. He has the abilities and the concern to get serious, as he has shown many times (healthcare reform interview with the death panel woman, taking on Crossfire dudes, Jim Cramer, etc).

He has played coy on that when he's been on Larry King's show, and I haven't been able to find where he's been asked the question directly and not been given a chance to deflect.

By the way, I think Franken is going to prove to be a good and serious Senator - even though I don't always agree with his opinions. Same goes for Stewart, if he ever does make a run.

OK, I had some time tonight to check out his appearances on Larry King Live (I thought this question HAD to have come up!) Sure enough, back in June 2004, a caller asked Jon if he would join Kerry on the Dems 2004 ticket. Jon deflected with a joke, and Larry asked if he would EVER run for office. He said no, but I don't think anyone would hold him to it. Here it is (and, btw, I would never stake anything on 100% accuracy of these transcripts):

CALLER: Hi. Jon, would you consider joining John Kerry on the ticket to run as vice president?

STEWART: That is an excellent question. I would consider it, unfortunately, there are some photos of me that would preclude me even from working at the post office, quite frankly.

KING: Would you ever run for office?

STEWART: Would I ever run for office?

KING: Yes, really?

STEWART: No. I make a lot of money writing jokes. I get to go home, nobody bothers me. I don't have to get people to vote on things.

KING: What about helping your country.

STEWART: Who? Country? Pah -- they're not, why should i?

He was asked that and said no, besides he is the leading canidate to replace Letterman in a few years.

Do you have a source for that statement?

I don't have a source, but I heard Stewart say he does not want to run for office, and I heard Craig Ferguson would like to see Stewart at the Letterman spot in an article by TV Guide. Stewart's contract runs out with Comedy Central the same time Letterman's runs out for CBS. I think he is a sure thing to replace Letterman.

Jeff, Larry King raised this question in one of his recent interviews of Stewart. Stewart deflected. (But, PLEASE don't make me go back and find the specific passage - skimming those transcripts is not one-one-hundredth as fun as watching the interviews themselves, though it does take a lot less time. Here's the link to a list of Larry's last 9 yrs, I searched "jon stewart" on the page to quickly find the several times he's been on. http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/lkl.html . Should be easy to search "Letterman" on the page - I couldn't figure a sensible way to search "run for office".)

Y'sure that'll be "a few years", andrew??? ;-) Seriously, though, that would be a great move for him - and us. But, what leads you to suggest that, andrew? --mm
