What is the best way to set up a home surveillance system cheaply?

I'm considering using dorgem and webcams. Question for a mahalo dollar.

If you're tech-savvy, or not even that tech-savvy, but at least tech-conscious, looks like webcams are indeed a tempting choice. You can pretty spend as much or (relatively) as little as you want. There are $1000 systems and then I saw a wireless USB system on eBay listed for a starting bid of $41 (link below). Not sure how reliable it is, but...

For installation-type stuff, I've had a lot of luck with instructables.com, direct link also below.

I suggest using the X10 home automation/security products over webcams. They make a great line of cameras and even software that lets you view the feed from them through the internet. X10 also sells home automation products, like for controlling lamps and appliances remotely and even though a computer. All their products integrate well with one another, too. Check them out at www.x10.com .
