I think this is bunk. Most online backup solutions like mozy.com encrypt both the channel and the final backup. So sending the password makes no sense. They only use the password to log you in. This means that nobody but you has access to your data.

I think it's marketing.

I have found a service at https://pluto.une.edu/encrypt.php which allows you to store very large encrypted files at no charge. You put your e-mail address in for both the to and from addresses and you'll get an e-mail containing a link to that file for later retrieval. If you don't need encryption, they also have a four year storage system available at http://files.une.edu .
