Search Results for "Exactly how many phone numbers can there be in the United States of America?"

How many theoretically could there be? How many are really being used today? Support your answer any sources would be much appreciated.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

With 10 digits in a phone number, technically, that would be 10^10 (Probability theory). However, the first (and 4th) number can't be a 1 or a zero, and "555" for the middle three digits is reserved for fictional phone numbers (since movies aren't allowed to use real phone #'s). Also, for obvious reasons, the first three digits (and the middle three digits) cannot be 411 or 911.

So that means there are 8*100 -2 = 798 possible area codes.

There are 797 possible 'middle three' digit sequences.

There are 10,000 possibilities (0000-9999) for the last 4 digits.

Which means that theoretically, there could be 6,360,060,000 phone numbers in the US.

Lets see, there is an approximation of 113,000,000 households in the US alone. (http://www.census.gov/prod/1/pop/p25-1129.pdf), about 97% of these have at least one phone, so 109,610,000 to account for the households.

This does not include the cell phone or businesses and their phones:

81% of the population has a cell phone.

Business land lines are not accounted for, but for individuals, and all cell phones, the number today exceeds the number of people in the US.

Current population of the US is
304,059,724 (www.google.com/publicdata)
at 81%, yields about 246million cell phones plus the 109 million land lines, along with any businesses, we could be looking at nearly 400 million or more phone numbers in the US
