Why is Google not working?

It seems that for the last couple days none of my Google applications have been working consistently. The rest of the internet works like a charm, but as soon as I try to do something Google related, I am showered with failure.

*I have Google firefox extensions, which wont load
*I have a Gmail account, I can't access
*I have a Google Docs account, I can't access
*YouTube won't load and neither will videos embedded on other websites
*pages with google code in them (analytics, adsense) will not complete loading (the firefox tab will continue to spin forever)
*Google.com will not load.

Again each problem seems to be inconsistent, one moment everything will work fine, the next nothing works but right now its about 90% of the time nothing works.

The problems occur in Firefox, IE and Chrome.

Needless to say the problem is frustrating and is effecting how I work, any tips and tricks on how I can fix this will be appreciated, but whomever provides the answer cure will receive a handsome tip.

Since you're having trouble reaching a large range of services all hosted by the same company, I think you may have a problem with name resolution. The way your browser is currently looking up domain names is most likely through your ISP. If the ISP doesn't respond or is slow to respond, it can cause problems.

You may want to change who you use for Domain Name Service (DNS). Your browser asks "Where is www.google.com?" and it expects to get an IP address in return. You can use any server you want for this service.

OpenDNS provides this service for free and doesn't require an install. You just need to change some settings on your computer or router.

I personally find it to work much faster than my cable company's DNS servers.

Sounds like DNS failure, perhaps. Have you tried using an alternate DNS server? Your ISP should provide you with several DNS servers. You may also use other people's. Many people like to use the 4.2.2.2 server which I believe is Verizon's.

Actually, this is probably NOT you, it's probably Google! I just did a search of the micro-blogging service Twitter.com for "gmail down" and as you can see from the screen grab below a LOT of people are having problems.

Google seemed to be down for me a few weekends ago and as it turns out, it was just me. On both my laptop (MacBook Pro) and iMac, using Firefox 3 and Safari, I could access everything BUT Google (and Gmail, Picassa, anything related). Finally I unplugged my wireless router and modem and restarted everything. Miraculously, everything returned to normal. I know it's not a 'technical' answer...but that's what I'll be doing next time it happens.
