What do you think about Mahalo's front page? What could we do to make it more compelling?

What is your honest opinion about the Mahalo front page? Does it draw you in? Does it give you all the information you need? What do you think about the layout and design? What are some suggestions for making it more compelling, addictive and refreshable? What features/tweaks would it take for you to make Mahalo your default landing page?

To be honest, I find the front age quite frustrating. I just start reading about something on the front page and it fades out and is replaced by another article. This is the main issue I find. I would much prefer it if the site didn't automatically refresh, maybe a manual operation instead?

I like the layout and colouring of the site, but feel that there is a bit too much text and not enough graphics.

.. but there again, I'm not a design guru so what do I know :)

A have to agree with this, I love that there are so many stories on the front page, but I don't really like the way they change automatically, I do see the pause button, but the last thing I want to do is locate the pause button every time I visit the front.

We should slow down the rotation. @Eric let's do that.

Interesting point about there being too much text and not enough graphics. Are there any other sites you like or examples of ones that do a good job striking this balance?

I personally like the BBCs web sites ( http://www.bbc.co.uk and http://news.bbc.co.uk ). I think they have the balance just about right both for their main site and also their news site.

Sometimes it feels cluttered, or too much. You've got to make it like Google or better yet iGoogle, very simple and customizable. It's these start home pages like iGoogle, Netvibes, etc. that people want to make their home page. You should make it customizable, allow the user to move stuff around if they do not like it. For instance, some users who like Mahalo Answers would rather see that on top, or the Liveblog on the side.

I definitely like the idea of a customizable homepage with widgets that you can shift around, however, this sort of feature would probably be only used by a small, tech-savvy portion of our users - like you. Still, cool idea!

the first thing that comes to mind is that it is a site for a travel agency, then once you look at the content it seems like it is not really focused on specific function, it is like Jason is trying to capture all information from every corner from every minute; OVERLOAD!! maybe instead of providing all this information on the home page you can increase the content of mahalo daily and maybe instead of it being daily it could be weekly, a week in review. I like mahalo daily, I think it should get more of a presence on the front page. I think it would be great to do a half hour weekly of a round up of news and also you can do a diggnation style review of q&a from mahalo answers. Scale down the real estate of the live blog, stop the auto refresh of the news items that are there and instead of ten featured items that rotate in each category cut it back to three with no auto refresh. that is what comes to mind right now, I think it is great the people of Mahalo are being pro-active and reaching out to the people who use the site for advice. I look forward to the future of mahalo, I would love a one stop shop for all my information needs. I love the idea of the human driven search engine and I like mahalo daily.

I think that cutting down the number of stories in each tab might be a good idea. I'd probably go with 5 myself, as 3 seems too little to cover all the important stories each day.

here is something else to think about in this renewal consideration for the Mahalo Home page. I really like the concept of "Human Driven Search Engine". To me that is the true essence of a social network. It is like a web3.0 catch phrase, why not have Mahalo coin the phrase and own it. Give the actual phrase a place on the home page, I believe that will be a provocative, thought evoking phrase for people to consider. I believe also that will give people more of a instant understanding of what the site is all about. I like the synergy that could come to fruition with Mahalo, Mahalo Answers and Mahalo daily. I know I keep going back to Mahalo daily and that is because I like to see information delivered to me, I am a visual person, I like to watch things. I always gravitate to sites that offer video broadcasts.

My really really honest opinion and the promise that I won't get banned? It looks like some kid tried to do SEO with random bits of collected info and failed. That news animation that keeps going on and on it's really annoying. It's simply horrible. The front page doesn't make me click on anything. I wouldn't click even on Mahalo Answers if this was the first time visiting the site. Sorry. :(

My suggestions: don't try to cram in all the info on the first page. Highlight only the most important features. Make Mahalo Answers the "main attraction" of the site. Maybe put some screenshots or a screencast of M.A. on the front page, explaining the features. Don't just drop some info on me, explain what this site is all about! Highlight Mahalo Daily on the front page, put that clip right on top. Liveblog's just horrible, with all those colored labels and stuff, I don't really see the value in it.

So, yeah... I wouldn't follow anything on Mahalo except Mahalo Answers and Mahalo Daily.

Mahalo Answers isn't the "Main Attraction" - the News is.

Don't worry, honest opinions are what I was looking for here. Don't spare our feelings. We are trying to make a compelling site and honest feedback is crucial. I think you make an important point here, which is: The front page doesn't make you want to CLICK on anything.

While Mahalo Answers is a big part of Mahalo now, I don't think that it should be the "Main Attraction" although maybe it should have a more prominent spot on the Front Page.

I never go the Mahalo main page, I've just bookmarked the Answers page.

I'm surprised that News is supposed to be the main attraction of Mahalo. Though I guess I'm not sure what exactly Mahalo is intended to be.

I am interested in news, but I get my online news from Time, the New York Times, the BBC. I don't know why I would go to Mahalo instead.

Hi Andy,
I am probably representing a small minority with my explanation of why Mahalo is not my default landing page, but you asked what could be done to get it to be...

I avoid news as much as possible. I know there are news junkies out there. I'm not one. I find the news to focus primarily on the horrible parts of this life. I don't care to hear about the murders, robberies, house fires, corruption, etc.

I want to fill my world with things that lift my spirit. I know that there are good things happening in the world every single minute of every single day. Sadly, dirty laundry sells. (Think TMZ and the Drudge Report)

If I had an option to have only news that showed aloha on Mahalo, I'd be more willing to use the site. However, I won't make anything my launch page when the top news is negative.

I fully agree that seeing horrific and depressing news stories every day could be a reason not to use it as your homepage. What DO you have set as your default landing page and why? Are there any features that we could integrate into Mahalo?

Hi Andy,
I have used iGoogle as my landing page for a while. I have very little on it: calendar, email, twitter gadget, techbargains feed, google finances (which can be depressing too), and weather. I have had Google Reader on there, but I didn't use it very much, so I removed it yesterday. I have had recipe of the moment and quotes/words of the day. I enjoyed them for a while.
I think this is the key to why it is my landing page. I choose what I see and what I don't. Because I couldn't find happy news, I eliminated news.

As soon as I launch my browser, I open 3 more tabs: work email (inotes), facebook, and Mahalo Answers.
I like the profile feature of Mahalo. http://www.mahalo.com/member/ppalmer21
I might consider that a landing page if instead of the box where it offers to let me ask myself a question a twitter-like status box appeared.

Very interesting idea. Maybe we could add some cool social and personal features to the profile pages so people could keep all of their favorite sites on there.

A couple of thoughts.

1. Eliminate Mahalo Features that keep rotating, and the categories. It looks like spam.

2. Slow down the Mahalo News section.

3. Put the ask a question box up top, like the pic I will attatch.

Wow! Cool mock-up. I do like the idea of giving Answers a more prominent place on the front page, although I think that the liveblog should get some space also.

Every time I go to the Liveblog, there is only one person there. For me, it is quite useless. I think also the search box should be centered, and it should be less clutter.

As everybody has already pointed out, the most annoying feature on the Mahalo front-page is the rapidly changing news articles. To overcome this problem you have two or three options : --

1. Make the " Pause " button bigger

http://i40.tinypic.com/mkunw0.png

2. Do not start the " Slideshow Of News " by default, instead you could display the most popular news item in full, while the other news items can have the title along with images displayed beside them.

Other than that the " Categories" section should also be given an overhaul, in the sense that it is all packed together and is difficult to read. Moreover I do not think that the Category Section has any purpose on the front page, you may be able to tell it better by using some free online software like " Crazy-egg " which tells you which part of a certain page gets most clicked.

The " Live Blog " section is the one part I really like the most, so I definitely feel that section should be kept intact.

I would highly recommend a website " in.com" ( an Indian website) from where you might be able to draw some inspiration as I really feel that this website combines packs the maximum info into the front-page, yet does so keeping the front page clean.
