This is really more of an opinion question.
SEO-wise I'm not sure there is a "number" unless you were putting the keyword in the description or title of every item. Then you might be seen as spamming.
In my opinion, the best option for this is to OFFER options. Some people are still on dialup and it could mean they leave your site rather than wait for it to load. Myself, I'm a picky shopper, especially with clothes. I want the option to "View All". I'd rather scroll through one page than 5... but if there are thousands of items, let me look at 100-250 at a time.
Others might like 5, 15, 25, 40, 60, etc.
If you have the option to provide a range of choices in the template you are using, I suggest doing that. I think those that want to look at several more closely are going to open a separate tab or window for those anyway. I do.
Make sure you have the default as something lower like 10-20 items. You don't want to lose anyone because their page takes a long time to load.

In the layout you have, more than 15 items would be too complicated to decide what you want to buy.
But a better layout might help customers shop - If you can list off the products like the bottom portion of the hulu website here, I think more items could be decided on at once, you could probably up the number to 40.
I always like to choose between 5 or 6 things I want, at bare minimum, and when I'm just beginning the search it's usually around 30 different products.

40 items is too many for the layout you have. 15 would be better. I can't really make a decision from 40 items that I have to keep scrolling up and down on.
A way you could make it so 40 items would be more comprehendable is if you listed your inventory like hulu.com lists their videos, that way people can see everything they need at once, and wouldn't need to scroll as much.
