Oh, I think this will be dicey! In the new plot, The Phantom is working as a Coney Island freak show attraction who still pines for Christine and lures her to Coney Island in 1906. Yikes. This stinks of desperation and parody.

I think even the title is a big mistake. "The Phantom of the Opera" by itself is an intriguing title that is attention-grabbing and dark. "Love Never Dies" sounds like a bad trashy romance novel and gives no allusions to anything sinister or phantom-like. Snooze.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope it's brilliant, haunting, and touching.

But I fear it is a way to cash a paycheck for Weber, who's career has been spotty at best. Very hit-and-miss. And I do think that "Phantom" is the real jewel in his crown (far better than that insipid "Cats"). It has real heart and intrigue, beautiful music, and a memorable theater experience.
