Scott Brown, the Republican candidate for Ted Kennedy's senate seat, posed nude for Cosmo in 1982.

Would a woman who had done the same thing thing be taken seriously as a candidate?

Heckkkk no, she wouldn't have been taken seriously! Any woman with a nude centerfold pic in a magazine would've faced a double threat in her political career:

#1 - WOMEN, who would've berated her for compromising herself and making all women look like pieces of meat. Feminists would've been all over this and called for a stronger woman to take a leadership position. And I kind of agree that I would want a woman in office who has more wisdom and better judgement than to pose nude in a society like ours that still struggles to treat women as equals.

#2 - MEN, some of whom first, would criticize her appearance and demean her with mockery. And then they'd use that as an open door to politically dismiss her as a flighty woman. A nude photo would be a political weapon against her. Imagine if Sarah Palin had posed nude before running as VP?? Can you imagine how skewered she would've been??

I'm sorry to say that I ascribe to the double standard to some extent. I personally find it refreshing to see a male figure splashed in photos across the media for a change (no more melons! I can't takes the jugs anymore!), and I find it mildly humorous that he posed for it...because it doesn't MEAN the same thing for him to have done it. It just doesn't. He's representing a gender and race that has always dominated in politics, so the pressure isn't there to "prove" his character on behalf of his entire gender.

He'll get a free pass for this. But a woman wouldn't, and probably won't a thousand years from now.

I'm with you on the breast overload, Katie. Seems like it is a Mahalo requirement to show cleavage in featured page pics. =D

Stormy Daniels, an apparent candidate for Senate in Louisiana, has posed nude, to put it mildly, and a lot more.

Scott Brown mostly has his looks going for him. The Cosmo spread was quite a few years ago though.

I agree with this post.

It does depend on context. But, imagine for a moment if nude photos of Senator Vitter turn up in some little known magazine. He'd be sunk completely.

I'm disagreeing with you on this one, albanian. I think the attempted distinction in your reply actually shows that using Daniels as the counterpoint to Brown does not fly; the main reason she gets attention is because her background is a counterpoint to VITTER and his hypocrisy. But for Vitter, Daniels wouldn't even be a good gimmicky candidate. Thus, using her to argue that *less inhibited* men and women are on a level playing field in politics actually proves the opposite.

True, Daniels has posed nude, among other things. She's also not really taken seriously as a candidate. She's gotten a lot of press attention, but it's all got to do with her looks and her past. No one is discussing her views, her beliefs, or the things she plans to do if elected.

It's true many people do not take her seriously; but, that's because of her lack of political experience. The papers do report what she says about the various typical issues. But, the main issue that inspires her campaign is the incumbent Senator Vitter's blatant hypocrisy. That's why a lot of people want to draft her. A point I'm trying to make is that no one is saying "She can't run, she posed nude." Quite the reverse.

It may be a while before any middle aged, experienced lawyers run for office who posed nude in their youth. It just wasn't done twenty years ago. Now that digital cameras and cell phone cameras are ubiquitous, the next generation of candidates will probably all have nude photos turning up.

No, I do not think so.
The standard for male vs female politicians is definitely not on a level playing field. Being a male it is going to be viewed by the majority of male politicians as a badge. If it was a female the view would no doubt take a turn for the worse, it would be used as ammo toward her credibility to the point that regardless of her qualifications she would not get a fair shake.
It is sad that this is the way things are at this time.

Unfortunately, in my opinion. No. Plus it would be a much bigger story. I had no idea Scott Brown did that and I am willing to bet not many others did as well. Why? Because the Press knew people wouldn't care that much about a guy doing it. But if it was a girl, every newspaper and TV station would run a story about it.
